Every spring at Augsburg College, the Goliard Society of Medievalists, a student club, hosts a big party to celebrate the midwinter carnival before Lent. It's Mardi Gras Madrigals! Huzzah! This annual event always features jugglers and musicians, storytellers and poets, and a full medieval feast eaten without utensils, of course.
This year's Mardi Gras Madrigals will feature members of the internationally acclaimed Rose Ensemble (shown above). Founded in 1996, The Rose Ensemble reawakens the ancient with vocal music that stirs the emotions, challenges the mind, and lifts the spirit. The Saint Paul, Minnesota group tours internationally with repertoire spanning 1,000 years and 25 languages.
Augsburg has a long relationship with the Rose Ensemble. In 2006, the group performed in the "Many Voices, Bold Visions" convocation series, presenting "Common Threads: Exploring Shared Texts Among Early Christians and Jews." In 2011, artistic director Jordan Sramek worked with a new madrigal group on campus, the Schola Goliardi, which performed in that year's Mardi Gras Madrigals. We look forward to the many musical surprises the Rose Ensemble will bring to this year's feast.
This year (2012), Mardi Gras takes place on Tuesday, February 21st, in Hoversten Chapel. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Box office opens at 6 PM. Tickets are $25. For reservations go to www.augsburg.edu/mardigras
