“The
three ‘R’s’ for me in education are relationships,
relativity and reflection. I want to model what I want students to
do, not just talk about it.” Ron Petrich recently completed
30 years with the Minneapolis Public School where he taught in the
social sciences, wrote curriculum, served as lead mentor teacher,
developed and administered a residency and mentorship program and
served as a professional development coordinator. He practices at
Augsburg what he has taught, by building mentoring relationship with
students. “We stress learning over performance – creating
safe climates where students can take risks. We build on a competency
model – stressing constant improvement.”
Ron strives to involve students in their education so they become
active, participatory learners. He calls himself a “coach and
facilitator who establishes a climate of safety and trust.” Education
is about building community, connections and relations. He emphasizes
it’s not that we “have to” do something, it’s
that we “get to.”
