ACADEMICS

MAE studentAt Augsburg College you can pursue your dreams of becoming a teacher while continuing to work.

We do this by offering classes that meet every other weekend and limited weekday evenings.

Average time to licensure completion is 3 years for elementary education, 2 years for secondary, and 2 years for special education. Degree completion follows and averages one or two years.

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

Specialty areas in math, communication arts, and social studies are available through weekend and weekday evening courses.

The science specialty area is available through a combination of weekday, weekday evening, and weekend courses.

A new pre-primary specialty is now available through weekend and weekday evening classes. This can be added to the elementary license in place of or in addition to the middle school specialty. Already licensed elementary teachers can also add this endorsement at the graduate level. Learn about the pre-primary specialty>>

SECONDARY EDUCATION

Social studies and communication arts/literature
K-12 license in art

Other majors can be completed through the day program while completing licensure coursework through Weekend College. These licensure majors include: biology, chemistry, health education, mathematics, music education, physical education, physics, and theatre arts.

SPECIAL EDUCATION*

K-12 license in emotional and behavioral disabilities
K-12 license in learning disabilities

TRIBAL SPECIAL EDUCATION

Beginning Fall 2008, Augsburg College and the University of Minnesota Duluth will offer a post-baccalaureate special education license with a focus on tribal communities and learning styles. This 2-year program in emotional behavioral disorders and learning disabilities is ideal for teachers seeking licensure in this area or for other professionals interested in an initial special education license focused on the unique needs of American Indian learners.

*The MAE program with licensure in special education is based on an innovative internship model that allows coursework and experience to occur simultaneously. In addition to student teaching, students must complete two 40-hour field placements where they will gain experience working with students from age groups different from their internship site.

Already licensed teachers can work towards the MAE degree through the following two options:

SPECIAL EDUCATION

K-12 license in emotional and behavioral disabilities
K-12 license in learning disabilities
