Teaching
at Augsburg is a joyous experience. Deep learning requires hard work
on the part of students and faculty, but the work is fulfilling. In
every class I teach, from Practice with Groups to History and Analysis
of Social Policy, there's a few key elements I hope students take
away. I want students to use their highest levels of critical thinking
skills and to reflect that in their writing and speech. Using these
high levels of critical thinking skills requires students to look
at problems in new ways, and frame arguments differently. I want students
to find ways to think innovatively in the classroom and in the field
of social work.
I also want to help them see their social work careers as full of
passion. Social work has a knowledge base that helps us all navigate
through life more easily. If we take the time to delve into the knowledge
our discipline has gained, imagine ourselves contributing to advancing
that knowledge, then put it to use in society, the exciting work that
lays before us is endless!
