Academic Advising - General Assessment Information

Modern Language Assessment

In order to be placed into the appropriate level of language study, the Modern Languages department provides students with the opportunity to take an online Modern Language Placement Test (MLPT). This test will allow students to be placed into the level of language instruction that best suits their individual abilities and goals.

Who should take the test?
Students with two or more terms of high school French, German or Spanish should take the Modern Language Placement Test. Students with no background in these languages, or who plan to take a different language than one previously studied, will begin with an introductory level language course (level 111) and have no need to take the test.

How can I test out of the language requirement?
Students seeking exemption from the Modern Language requirement need to place into an intermediate level or higher of a second language before this exemption can be granted. Language testing will be completed in the Academic Advising office.

Students interested in pursuing higher levels of Norwegian language study should contact Frankie Shackelford in the Modern Languages department at 612-330-1292.

When should I take the test?
Students who are already enrolled or have recently transferred to Augsburg should take the test before any registration period in which they plan to register for a language class. Incoming first-year students will take the test as part of their entry-level assessments before SOAR.

How long is my score valid?
Because language study is an ongoing process and relies heavily on retention from previous study, the results of the online placement test will be valid for one year from the date on which a student takes the exam. However, the Modern Languages Department recommends that you take the test before the registration period in which you intend to register for a modern language course. If you take the test and don't register for the appropriate classes within the time allotted, you will be required to take the test again and obtain a new placement score before you will be able to register for course levels 112 and higher.

Is there a fee for the test?
There is no fee for the Modern Language Placement Test.
