Summer Orientation and Registration (SOAR)
Incoming first-year students at Augsburg will register for Fall 2017 classes at First Year Summer Orientation and Registration (SOAR). This two-day, overnight experience includes placement testing, advising, and registration – as well as many fun activities to prepare you for college life and meet other future Auggies.
There are three separate opportunities to attend SOAR in Summer 2017:
- Friday, July 21 – Saturday, July 22
- Monday, July 24 – Tuesday, July 25
- Wednesday, July 26 – Thursday, July 27
Beginning April 1, 2017, students can RSVP for SOAR online through the Office of Campus Activities & Orientation.
New first-year students may be required to take short placement tests in math and writing. Students with experience in Spanish, French, and German may also opt to take a language placement test.
Students with disabilities may request accommodations for placement tests and registration. To request accommodations, call 612-330-1053.
Students may take a short math placement test the morning of the first day of SOAR (10 or 20 multiple-choice questions). Please bring a calculator with you! Depending on your high school math background, you will take a math placement test that covers basic math, algebra, and/or precalculus. This short multiple-choice placement test will determine your Math Placement Group and helps determine what kinds of courses would be appropriate for you in your first semester at Augsburg.
For more information, including a practice math test and review resources, see the general Placement Tests information on our page.
Students will take a 30-minute online writing placement essay test.
If you’ve completed the writing portion of the ACT and have ACT directly send your scores to Augsburg, you will not be required to complete the writing placement test — a high school transcript will not be sufficient.
Academic Advising will email students who did not complete the writing portion of the ACT about taking the 30-minute online writing placement test starting Monday, June 12.
This writing sample will be used for placement into college writing.
Students who have 2 or more years of language study in French, German, or Spanish may take an online placement test. This online test usually takes about 15 minutes. Academic Advising will reach out to students beginning June 12 to provide access to language testing through the First-Year Registration Workshop.
Advising and Registration
During SOAR, professional academic advisors will present Augsburg’s academic curriculum and requirements. In addition, advisors will discuss your academic plans, transfer coursework, and career goals, and help you select appropriate courses for your first semester of college.
Beginning June 12, Academic Advising will reach out to incoming first-year students to provide access to University email accounts, online writing and language testing, and First Year Registration Workshop.
This will allow you to start preparing for the Summer Orientation and Registration (SOAR) experience by thinking about what majors and minors you might be interested in exploring.
College Credit Earned in High School
First-year students who have earned college credits in high school through programs such as Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), College in the Schools (CIS), or Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) will need to have an official transcript sent to Augsburg by the credit-granting organization to be awarded credit — a high school transcript will not be sufficient. Please have all credits submitted before SOAR so that you can be advised properly when you are registering for classes.
Please send official transcripts to:
Admissions Office – Box 143
2211 Riverside Ave
Minneapolis, MN 55454
If the college/university you attended offers secure electronic delivery of official transcripts, you may provide email@example.com as the email recipient.
If you have any questions or concerns about first-year registration, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or 612-330-1025.
