American Indian Student Services is a multifaceted office established in 1978 to recruit and retain American Indian students. It is a national model of success and continues to have one of the highest retention and graduation rates of Indian students in the state of Minnesota.
Today more than 100 Indian students have graduated from Augsburg, and each year approximately 50 students are enrolled both full and part time, undergraduate and graduate, representing over 20 tribal nations.
Our graduates are valued members of their communities. They maintain their contact with the AISSP and are invaluable in our networking with current students.
Jennifer Simon started with Augsburg in September 2007. She is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Lakota (Sioux) Tribe, Mnicoujou Band, in South Dakota and grew up on the reservation. Her passion is to help her people, and because she went through the higher education system for her BA and MA degrees, she knows many of the struggles that Native students face while earning their degrees. Jennifer is here to help and support the American Indian Students at Augsburg.
Honoring Culture and Community
Through the American Indian Student Services Program, Augsburg offers national and local speakers of interest to the regional American Indian community. The program sponsors conferences, seminars and forums featuring topics such as sovereignty, treaty rights, spirituality, families and children, education and environmental issues. More contemporary issues such as nuclear storage, affirmative action, gaming and interactive learning on reservations have also been offered. Augsburg also sponsors various cultural events and is available for community meetings.
Our graduates are valued members of their communities. They maintain their contact with the AISSP and are invaluable in our networking with current students.
