We, as Indian educators, must reach out to help our youth meet their personal and professional potential. When Indian students have positive role models in the classroom, they perform at a much higher level. This raises their self-esteem, providing a base for leadership roles and healthy work ethics. Join us at Augsburg College in the Minnesota Indian Teacher Training Partnership (MNITTP). We have many success stories and invite you to our campus for a visit to meet the participants in the program. MNITTP In 1992, the Minnesota Legislature designated Augsburg College the fourth Minnesota Indian Teacher Training Partnership (MNITTP) in the state. We "partner" with the Minneapolis and St. Paul Public Schools which means that Augsburg educates and trains students to be teachers, the students do their student teaching in either Minneapolis or St. Paul Public Schools and one of the districts hires the students on completion of their licencure program. Research in 1991 showed that the Minneapolis public school system employed only 16 identified American Indian teachers out of 2,700 - about 125 short of parity. Augsburg College, with its leadership and demonstrated commitment to the American Indian community, sought to address this situation with the development and implementation of the training program. Financial Aid This program provides a special grant and forgivable loan for elementary and secondary education majors. The loan portion of the financial aid package is forgiven based on the number of years students teach after they complete Augsburg's academic requirements and become licensed in the state of Minnesota. Since these special dollars often supplement the general financial aid package, it is important to apply early - January is the best time to send in your application. Admission to the Program
How to Apply You must apply early to include the aid as a part of your general financial aid package. The best time to apply is in January.
Augsburg College and the Education department require an overall GPA of 2.5. A GPA of 2.5 in the major and grades of "P" in student teaching courses required for licensure, as well as minimum grades of 2.0 in each education course.
