vespers servicePlan to be a part of Advent Vespers this year? If you’re able to lend a hand to this signature Augsburg College event, we’d love to welcome you as a volunteer at any one of five services. We could use many volunteers to usher and work the will-call table.

Vespers services will be held:

Friday, December 5: 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Saturday, December 6: 2 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Volunteers should plan to arrive at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis (333 S. 12th St.) 60-90 minutes prior to each service. The service lasts approximately 90 minutes.

If you are able to volunteer at Vespers this year, please contact Jenna Leahy at leahy@augsburg.edu.

Calling All Norwegian Sweaters!!

Choir of SweatersWe like to think of Velkommen Jul at Augsburg College as the largest gathering of Norwegian sweaters in Minnesota. This traditional festival to usher in the Christmas season brings campus together around a lovely, historic tradition that features Scandinavian yuletide music, tasty treats including krumkake and lefse, Norwegian bunads, a bake sale of holiday goodies, and a visit from St. Nicholas during chapel. Donations are accepted and welcomed in support of student scholarships.

We love gathering together each year for this event that welcomes students from all backgrounds and faiths into long-cherished Augsburg traditions. But as we all know, these beautiful, long-wearing sweaters are not inexpensive.

Here is where you can help! Please consider donating any older or unworn Norwegian sweaters for our students to wear for this wonderful event and throughout the Christmas season. Sweaters must be clean and in reasonably good condition.  No matter who you are or your background, let’s share the wealth of Norwegian sweaters that is so proudly displayed here in Minnesota winters.

Please make your sweater donations by Wednesday, November 26 at noon. Please call 612-330-1085 with any questions. Sweater donations may be mailed or delivered to the Alumni and Advancement office at:

Connect with a Current Auggie

strommenThe Strommen Center for Meaningful Work is a terrific resource for students on campus. If you haven’t looked into its work in helping students develop the skills, habits of mind, and values that are the foundation for life choices, career success, and active citizenship, please do so. There are so many ways that alumni can support our students on their vocational journey.

Alumni are a critical way that students can connect with internships, learn about employment opportunities and how to navigate the hiring process. Ultimately, the Strommen Center works to help students find their own meaningful work. Be sure to check out the upcoming event’s on the Strommen Center’s website, or contact programming coordinator Sandy Tilton (612-330-1472; tilton@augsburg.edu) or DJ Hamm (612-330-1329; hammd@augsburg.edu) to find out more.

As an Augsburg alum, how can I help?

Get involved with Campus Kitchen and connect with Cedar-Riverside

Community garden smallStepping outside is a distinct reminder that summer is here, as Minnesotans flock to the lakes and rivers, and the temperature and humidity spike.  Campus Kitchen is actively preparing for its summer programming, planting vegetables in the community garden, prepping for summer meal distribution, collaborating with local farmers to facilitate two farmer’s markets, and getting ready for youth workshops at the Brian Coyle Community Center.

Campus Kitchen at Augsburg is a unique partnership between Augsburg College, The Campus Kitchens Project, A’viands Augsburg Dining Services, and local community agencies. It is a key component of the SABO Center for Citizenship and Learning, which works to strengthen and expand service learning, civic engagement, and experiential education on and around campus. There are several volunteer opportunities for alumni.

We welcome alumni participation with preparing, serving, and sharing meals with our Cedar-Riverside neighbors at local agencies, and look forward to seeing you in the neighborhood.

Volunteering at Commencement

There are dozens of ways alumni can get involved at Augsburg-from serving on a board or committee, to volunteering at Homecoming, or supporting current Auggies with career advice. Parents of Auggies often find joy volunteering at Commencement. The Matyi’s have taken time out of their weekend to volunteer at Commencement for 5 years. When asked why they volunteer, Elaine and Tim both exclaimed, “We enjoy seeing happy family and friends as they arrive to watch their graduate complete the Augsburg experience.”

If you would like to learn about ways to get involved, send us an email: volunteer@augsburg.edu.

Auggies Ride, Tour de Cure

A message from Alumni Board Member Jill Watson ’10:

At the spring Alumni Board meeting in 2013, Janeece Oatman ’05, Tour de Cure Twin Cities Ride Director, was our guest speaker.  At this meeting, I learned about the Tour de Cure, a fundraising event held in 44 states nationwide to benefit the American Diabetes Association.  Immediately, I knew I wanted to ride.  My mom has type II diabetes, a childhood friend has type I diabetes, and oddly enough, my small department of seven people has three type I diabetics, and this is probably just a small group of people in my life living with diabetes that I know about.

A group of cyclists with their bikesIn 2013, I rode the 27-mile route, though I was hesitant at first because it was by far the farthest I’ve ever gone on a bike, but it was wonderful!  I met some amazing people along the way, and two of the ladies I met while chatting before the ride remembered me (and my name!) when I saw them at another bike ride in the fall!  The scenery was gorgeous throughout Minneapolis and I found trails I never knew existed.  The riders with diabetes stand out, on purpose, in their red jerseys, and everyone there is cheering for them, and they know it as you ride by and yell “go red rider!”  The atmosphere was electric as everyone there was there for a cause.

I ride in honor of my family, friends, and coworkers; I ride to help put an end to diabetes; and I ride to support fellow Auggie Janeece and her amazing work with the American Diabetes Association. Out of all the events I participated in throughout 2013, Tour de Cure was by far my favorite and I can’t wait for the 2014 ride when I plan to tackle the 43-mile route!  I hope you’ll consider joining Team Auggie Accelerators where you’ll see the sights of Minneapolis and St. Paul, while supporting all those with diabetes.

Auggie students, alumni, staff, faculty, friends, and family are all welcome on team Auggie Accelerators!
