Christensen Symposium (Part 1) 7 p.m.—Hoversten Chapel, Foss Center
Join guest speaker Dr. Garry Wills as he addresses “Religion and the American Enlightenment.” Dr. Wills is the first of several prestigious guests during Augsburg’s 2005-2006 Convocation Series, Local Citizenship/Global Citizenship. He is adjunct professor of history at Northwestern University. He won the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1992 and the Pulitzer Prize in1993 for his book, Lincoln at Gettysburg: The Words That Remade America.He has won numerous additional awards for such diverse books as Chesterton, Politics and Catholic Freedom, Jack Ruby, The Second Civil War, Nixon Agonistes, Inventing America, Confessions of a Conservative, The Kennedy Imprisonment, Reagan’s America, Under God, Witches and Jesuits, John Wayne’s America, Saint Augustine, Papal Sin, Why I am a Catholic,and Saint Augustine’s Conversion.Dr. Wills has given serious attention to issues at the intersection of faith and politics.

Augsburg Ethnic Programs Celebration 6-6:45 p.m.—Christensen Center The American Indian, Pan-Asian, Pan- Afrikan, and Hispanic/Latino student service programs will host their fourth annual Homecoming reception. Alumni and friends of the College are invited to help celebrate the presence of these four ethnic programs on campus, and this year to give special honor to the ongoing work of the Pan-Asian program.

Baseball Alumni Game 6 p.m.—Parade Stadium
The alumni baseball game gives Augsburg baseball alumni an opportunity to lace up the spike and get back on the field, with alumni taking on current Augsburg players in a game at Parade Stadium.

Scholastic Connections Dinner 7-8:30 p.m.—Christensen Center
This annual dinner celebrates Scholastic Connections, a program the College unveiled four years ago. The scholarship program continues to grow in its support of post-secondary education for students from diverse backgrounds. Now entering its fifth year, Scholastic Connections joins Leaders of Tomorrow (current Augsburg students) with Leaders of Today (Augsburg alumni) in mentoring relationships and by providing scholarships to each student leader. In addition to renewing the scholarship awards for the previous recipients, President Frame will announce five new Scholastic Connections scholars, and introduce their mentors. This years’ celebration features original artwork honoring the Augsburg Pan-Asian Program created by Hmong artist Kao Lee Thao of St. Paul, Minn.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29

Los Gauchos de Roldan Noon-1 p.m.—Quad (rain site: Christensen Center)
The Hispanic/Latino Student Services group will host a Paraguayan music group performing South American music. Los Gauchos de Roldan performs authentic music and dance from the rural areas of Uruguay. The origins are rhythms and melodies brought by European immigrants that were adapted by Uruguayans, giving them a distinct tone and color. There are influences, as well, from Uruguay’s black population. The traditional instruments are the tworow button accordion and the guitar. In their performance they explain the roots and history of the music as they demonstrate the various rhythms, dances, and styles found in Uruguay as well as in neighboring countries Brazil and Argentina.

The Augsburg College Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1973 to recognize those who have participated in the College’s long and proud athletic history. Each year the Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet recognizes alumni who have contributed to the advancement of the College through athletics. 2006 Alumni Tour to China Information Session 10:30 a.m.—Riverside Room, Christensen Center
Please join us to learn about the special opportunities planned for the May 2005 China Tour: Sights & Spirits. Hosted by Professor Brad Holt, this 15-day tour begins in Beijing and will include Tiananmen Square, The Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Terra Cotta Warriors, and a boat cruise down the Yangtze River past the huge Three Rivers Dam that will be completed soon. The international city of Shanghai concludes this travel experience. In addition to visiting the famous sites of China the tour will include an investigation of the religions of China.
