Message about the Augsburg Fund
| Are you friends with Auggie Eagle in Facebook? |
Now, more than ever, gifts from our alumni provide vital support for Augsburg students. As another school year draws to a close, I invite you to make a gift to The Augsburg Fund. You might ask, “Why?” Read on to find out.
Whether your gift is large or small, making an annual gift to The Augsburg Fund is the best way to have a meaningful impact on the College. As of April 1, nearly 19% of our alumni have made a gift to the College, toward our audacious goal of 25%. Time is short. The fiscal year ends May 31.
And, thanks to a generous challenge from Don ’53 and Bev ’55 Oren, your gift to The Augsburg Fund can double (up to $100) if you haven’t made a gift in the last two years.
Recently, a student shared some difficult news with one of her hockey coaches. Heather’s family was having financial difficulties, and she felt compelled to leave Augsburg at the end of this semester. Her coach encouraged her to visit with a financial aid counselor. Working with the counselor, she was able to secure additional grants that once again made Augsburg affordable.
When you support The Augsburg Fund, you help the College provide emergency financial aid to allow students to remain in school, at Augsburg, when their families face financial challenges.
Today, I urge you to make a gift to The Augsburg Fund so that when the next “Heather” walks in to a financial aid visit fearing she will have to drop out, Augsburg can be there, again. You can give online, send a check, or give by phone at 800-273-0617. Our fiscal year ends May 31.
Thank you so much for your time and generous support of Augsburg.
Sincerely,
Joe Lindell
Director of The Augsburg Fund

Alumni Travel
Italian Treasures
November 2-12, 2009
You are invited to join the fellowship of other Augsburg alumni and friends on a journey of discovery to Italy in early November with art professor Kristin Anderson.
Travel among the medieval hill towns of Tuscany, discovering history along with the beauty of the surrounding vineyards and olive groves. In Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance, it becomes easier to understand how art pulled Europe out of the Dark Ages. In Umbria, where art is prayer, the town of Assisi stands out for inspiration and reflection. The Eternal City of Rome, one of the founding cities of Western Civilization and a significant place in the story of Christianity, offers an education in history and a tapestry of art, architecture, and culture woven over thousands of years. All along the way enjoy the delights of the Italian people and cuisine.
Contact the Office of Alumni Relations at alumni@augsburg.edu to learn more about this unique travel opportunity.

Sue (Johnson) Drakulic ’79Sue Drakulic graduated from Augsburg with a degree in English, secondary education. After graduation, Sue was hired by Honeywell, Inc., where she spent the next 22 years. She had a varied career at Honeywell with positions in Human Resources, Manufacturing, Marketing, and General Management. Sue’s last role at Honeywell was as the vice president/general manager of the Home Comfort Systems, a $350 million global business focused on residential products. Since leaving Honeywell, Sue has run her own management consulting firm, Drakulic & Associates. She is currently contracting with Hope Chest for Breast Cancer in the operations and development area.
Hope Chest for Breast Cancer is a local Twin Cities nonprofit that provides support to those touched by breast cancer by funding programs through the sale of donated upscale furniture, designer women’s clothing, accessories, and other major fundraising activities. Hope Chest funds programs that assist underserved women with financial support, educate women on the importance of early detection, and provide nutritious meals to those who are unable to cook while struggling with chemo/radiation treatments. Since 2004, Hope Chest has donated $750,000 to programs that directly serve local women and their families during this difficult time. For more information, go to www.hopechest.us.
Brad Bourn ’05
Brad graduated in 2005 with a BA in theater/communications. Since that time, he has received the Presidential Service Award for his work with youth on the North Side of Minneapolis, and in 2007 graduated from MSU with a master’s degree in public and nonprofit administration.
Brad has again put his extensive youth service and administration skills to public good by running as a progressive, change-minded leader for Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board Commissioner in District 6 (Southwest Minneapolis). For the last three years, he has worked as a program manager with youth service agencies and the Minneapolis Public Schools on the North Side. He began to see first hand where he feels youth are not being served effectively and has fought to keep parks on the North Side staffed, programmed, and safe despite park board reductions in service.
Especially during times of economic uncertainly, Brad is concerned that communities, and particularly their youth, continue to feel valued and supported. Cutting critical after-school and leisure-time activities and services often only increases isolation. He believes that all youth and families deserve beautiful parkland and strong park activities that help them achieve their community and personal goals.
For more information about Brad’s proposals for changes to the park system, go to www.Bradbournforparks.org or you can also find him on Facebook.
