The holiday season brings wonderful Augsburg traditions. This year, the Augsburg College Advent Vespers celebration will mark its 30th anniversary with five services: December 4 at 5 and 8 p.m., and December 5 at 2, 5, and 8 p.m.

Advent Vespers ushers in the holiday season with a service of music and liturgy, featuring traditional and contemporary hymns, anthems, carols, and readings. Entertaining an audience of nearly 8,000 annually, the Advent Vespers celebration is one of the largest holiday music events in the Twin Cities.

Held in the beautifully renovated Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis, Augsburg College's celebration of the Advent/Christmas season combines over 350 musicians, readers, and a full liturgical party. The services highlight the majesty of the space at Central Lutheran Church. Follow the drama of the processions and capture the splendor of the sounds from the choirs scattered throughout the sanctuary.

Seating envelopes for Advent Vespers are now available. Visit www.augsburg.edu/vespers for more information.

Another Augsburg tradition you will not want to miss is Velkommen Jul (Welcome Christmas), a celebration to welcome the holiday season. It provides an opportunity for alumni, friends, faculty, students and the greater Augsburg community to come together and celebrate the Scandinavian heritage on which Augsburg was founded. The celebration begins at 10:20 a.m. with a service in Hoversten Chapel of Scandinavian Christmas songs and a visit from St. Nicholas. Festivities continue in the Commons in Christensen Center at 11 a.m., where the Augsburg Associates, dressed in traditional Scandinavian attire, serve holiday treats and sell crafts.

I hope you will continue to make these Augsburg holiday traditions part of your own family traditions.

Sincerely,

Kim Stone
Director of Alumni and Constituent Relations

Upcoming Events

Fall theatre production of The Three Sisters, by Anton Chekhov
November 12, 13, 14 at 7 p.m.
November 15 at 3 p.m.
Tjornhom-Nelson Theater, Foss Center

One of Chekhov’s most beloved plays, The Three Sisters portrays the young Prozorov sisters, who struggle to find meaning and happiness in their lives as they come of age in an ugly provincial town far from their beloved Moscow. Typical of Chekhov’s works, The Three Sisters is a masterful blend of comedy and poignancy, beautifully captured for a contemporary audience in Paul Schmidt’s “refreshingly clear and colloquial” translation.

Tickets: $10 general public; $8 ACTC faculty, staff, and students; and $2 Augsburg students and children under age 12. Reservations can be made beginning two weeks prior to opening night. For reservations or other information, call 612-330-1257.

Augsburg Native American Film Series

A special screening of Mato Paha: Rally to Protect Bear Butte (Mitchell Zephier Sr, 2009) will be hosted by Mitchell Zephier Sr., Mark St. Pierre, and Tilda Long Soldier. Mato Paha: Rally to Protect Bear Butte “documents the escalating clash of cultures between those wanting to increase commercial use of the sacred site—Mato Paha (Bear Butte)—and those who strive to protect it and use it for religious purposes. Mato Paha clearly portrays the cultural contrast between indigenous values, beliefs, and practices, and the American perspective of land ownership and constitutional separation of civil government and religion.”

For information on the film go to: www.ProtectBearButte.com. For information on the series or specific questions, contact M. Elise Marubbio at marubbio@augsburg.edu or 612-330-1523.

Around Augsburg

Augsburg—a top Fulbright producer
Augsburg was once again cited in an article in the October 19 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education as one of the top producers of Fulbright awards for U.S. students last year in master’s institutions, being highlighted as a school with two or more Fulbright awardees. Katie Macaulay and Emma Sutton, both 2009 graduates, received Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships, to Malaysia and Indonesia, respectively. The article discusses the desire of the Fulbright program to attract more students and faculty from minority groups and two-year colleges.

350 International Day of Climate Action
Augsburg students led bikers to the State Capitol for a 350 rally on the Capitol lawn, sponsored by the Will Steger Foundation, Oxfam, 1Sky, and Augsburg in support of global climate change action. Rep. Betty McCollum and Rep. Keith Ellison, among other legislators, told those gathered to “keep your voices loud.”

The bikers arrived back on campus in time to join a crowd at halftime on the football field for a photo for 350.org., the organization led by Bill McKibben that strives to bring about a reduction of carbon emissions to 350 ppm, deemed the highest safe level by NASA scientists. See Augsburg’s photos posted at http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=augsburg&w=25654955%40N03 and read about the 5,200 global events on www.350.org.
