Homecoming 2011

This year’s Homecoming celebration was a resounding success with more than 1,200 Augsburg alumni, parents, and friends participating in the festivities during the week and on the weekend. Nine new members were inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame (more here) and the following Auggies were honored at the Homecoming convocation and luncheon:
Distinguished Alumni Awards: Corky Hall ’71, Wayne Jorgenson ’71, and Judith Schaubach ’68
First Decade Award: Adam Seed ’01
Spirit of Augsburg Awards: Arlin Gyberg, chemistry professor; and Norma
Noonan, professor and former director of the Master's of Arts in Leadership program

The week offered a broad range of activities, including opportunities for networking, alumni art displays in the Gage Family Art Gallery and the Christensen Center Art Gallery, athletics, presentations and mini-lectures by Augsburg faculty, beautiful fall weather for Saturday's “Taste of Augsburg” event in Murphy Square, and the Block Party following the football game. To close the week, a Saturday evening concert featured Hognander Music Scholars from the past 12 years. We are thrilled that so many alumni were able to return to campus to join in the celebration!

Augsburg College Theater Department presents: Marat/Sade
Directed by Darcey Engen
November 4-13, 2011
Tjornhom-Nelson Theater

It's best known as Marat/Sade, but Peter Weiss' play actually bears the lengthy title, The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat As Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton under the Direction of The Marquis de Sade. Directed by Darcy Engen, this production takes place within France's Charenton Asylum a number of years after the French revolution. The Marquis de Sade stages his play about the murder of a key figure in the revolution, Jean-Paul Marat, using his fellow asylum inmates as actors. As the performance begins, the bourgeois asylum director watches as inmates use the play to rail against post-revolutionary privilege. Chaos arises as the play within a play disintegrates into anarchy.

Chilstrom Autobiography Now Available

Herbert W. Chilstrom ’54, first Presiding Bishop of the ELCA, invites us into his life and his years in the Lutheran ministry in a newly published autobiography, A Journey of Grace: The Formation of a Leader and a Church. With a foreword by theologian Martin Marty, the book gives the reader a front-row seat to the birthing of a national church body and a window into the life of a remarkable Auggie who is a grace-filled man of faith and a church leader.

In the book, Chilstrom recalls his decision to attend Augsburg, even though it was expected that, as a Swedish Lutheran in Minnesota, he would attend Gustavus Adolphus. But family finances and a blooming love for a nursing student at Fairview led him to Augsburg, where he majored in sociology and served as student body president in his junior year. He graduated in 1954 and as an alumnus received Augsburg’s “Distinguished Alumni Award” in 1979. He also received the College’s first Augsburg Award in 1995. His gratitude for the enlightening influence of several of his professors—in particular, Anne Pedersen, Carl Chrislock, and Joel Torstenson—is obvious in the book, and he says it was at Augsburg that he learned that only by understanding history can we comprehend the world today.

He acknowledges that the impact of former Augsburg president Bernhard Christensen on him was “phenomenal,” and that this “introvert in an extrovert’s job” was a man of deep faith who was amazingly broad in his understanding of what a liberal arts education ought to be.

At Augsburg, Chilstrom was awakened to issues such as racism, anti-Semitism, and peace and justice, and he has come to believe that there is no better seedbed for growing peace in the world, particularly among people of different faiths, than a liberal arts college. He is proud of Augsburg for what it is doing to broaden a perspective that helps reveal what people of different faiths can do in common.

After serving two four-year terms as ELCA’s presiding bishop, Chilstrom retired in 1995. He currently lives in St. Peter, Minn. and Green Valley, Ariz., with his wife, the Rev. Corinne Chilstrom. Chilstrom’s book may be purchased through the Lutheran University Press at www.lutheranupress.org (click on Catalog), or by calling 1-888-696-1828.
