Everyone, especially Auggie, had a blast at this year's homecoming celebrations.

Homecoming 2009 recap

The rainy weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the hundreds of alumni from seven decades who returned to campus for Homecoming 2009. Highlights of the weekend included the Homecoming Convocation where we honored Brenda Talarico with the First Decade Award and James E. Haglund with the Spirit of Augsburg Award, and where we gave the Distinguished Alumni Award to Tove Dahl ’84 and Curt Rice ’84, Phebe Hanson ’50, Richard Thorud ’54, and Joyce Pfaff ’65.

Many new events were added this year including an Auggie Author Booksigning event, Welcome Back Banquet, a reception at neighborhood hangout Tracy’s, lectures by our distinguished faculty, and much more. In addition, new twists were added to some of the annual favorites. This year’s Pre-Game Picnic in the Park was more like a carnival, with food and prizes provided by several alumni groups, student groups, and athletic teams. The crowd favorite was the A-Club’s Pork Chop-on-a-Stick.

Following the football game, alumni, students, and friends enjoyed the live music performed by several alumni bands during the annual Block Party. The headliner group Rockin’ Hollywoods played “solid gold rock & roll” from the 1950s through the ’80s with an energy and excitement that captivated the audience. Homecoming ended with a bang with a fireworks display on Saturday night.

I would like to congratulate the 2009 Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees, the 2009 Alumni Award winners, and the members of the Class of 1959, who were inducted into the 50-Year Club.

Save the date for Homecoming 2010—October 11–16. If you are celebrating a reunion next year and you are interested in serving on the Reunion Committee, please e-mail alumni@augsburg.edu.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Alumni Spotlight

Tove Dahl ’84 and Curt Rice ’84—Distinguished Alumni Award Winners

Despite living and working in Norway, Tove Dahl and Curt Rice have remained closely connected to and involved in the life of Augsburg College since their graduation. Frankie Shackelford, chair of the Department of Languages and Cross-cultural Studies, wrote of these alumni: “Both individually and as a couple, Tove and Curt exemplify the kind of academic and civic, local, and global leadership that Augsburg College aims to foster.”

Dahl demonstrates “education for service” in her work as an associate professor of psychology at the University of Tromsø, as coordinator of their master’s program in psychology, and, in Minnesota each summer, as the dean of Skogfjorden, the Norwegian site of Concordia’s International Language Villages. She also serves as the vice chair of the board of Norway’s Centre for Peace Studies.

Dahl earned her bachelor’s degree in English at Augsburg and completed her doctorate in educational psychology at the University of Texas-Austin. She studied music at Svanvik Folk High School and developed a spinning and weaving curriculum for Skogfjorden while at the National Teachers Academy for the Applied Arts in Oslo. She also studied the literature of Norwegian immigrants in the U.S. at the University of Oslo. Her recent research engages issues of cognitive and linguistic development, motivation, and learners’ beliefs about knowledge.

In summer 2009 Dahl was awarded the royal medal of “Knight First Class” from His Majesty King Harald V of Norway for her work to promote cultural understanding and cooperation between the United States and Norway.

Dahl’s husband, Curt Rice, completed his bachelor’s degree at Augsburg and a doctorate in linguistics at the University of Texas-Austin. He has written and spoken widely on his research and on current issues in scientific and university leadership.

Rice chaired the English and Linguistics Departments at the University of Tromsø before becoming the director of the Center for Advanced Study in Theoretical Linguistics (CASTL), which was the first Center of Excellence at the University. Under his leadership, CASTL became a national pacesetter in the frequency and quality of international publications, including Rice’s own prolific work on optimality theory as it applies to phonology and grammatical gender. Rice is the co-editor of Linguistic Inquiry and serves on the editorial boards of several additional professional journals. In 2009 he became the vice provost or “pro-rector” for research and development at the University of Tromsø.

Don Steinmetz, professor of German and linguistics at Augsburg, writes, “Anyone who has known Tove Dahl and Curt Rice for the past 30 years since they were students at Augsburg College must be impressed by the productive lives of this couple.”
