Volunteer Opportunities

Auggie Liaison
Augsburg College is looking for enthusiastic and energetic alumni and parents to become “Auggie Liaisons.” In collaboration with the Admissions Department, we invite you to share your Augsburg story and make a difference in a potential student’s decision about college by attending and staffing the Augsburg booth at the following Lutheran college fairs in Kirkwood, MO; Indianapolis, IN; Roselle, IL; and Naperville, IL. The college fairs will be in the evening from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

As an Auggie Liaison, you will encourage potential students to complete a card requesting more information from the College and will be provided with up-to-date Augsburg information, a list of available classes, and a fast facts sheet to answer questions: Do I have to write an essay? Does Augsburg have my major? You will also be provided with an Augsburg polo shirt to wear and show your school colors!

If you are not able to volunteer at the college fair but are still interested in being an Auggie Liaison, you could serve as an Augsburg representative with your home congregation. We will send you a packet of material to share with potential Auggies.

If you would like to meet the future Auggies and share your own Augsburg story, email alumni@augsburg.edu.

ABC Mentor Program
Thanks to the launch of the new mentor program Augsburg Builds Connections (ABC), more students can benefit from the knowledge of alumni who are working in their industry or organization of choice. The ABC mentoring program is designed to enable parents and alumni professionals to provide information, encouragement, and support to students. This flexible volunteer program allows mentors to connect with students by email, phone, or in face-to-face meetings and assist them in navigating their career path and achieving their professional goals. To learn more about the program and how to get involved, go to www.augsburg.edu/alumni/abc.html.

Alumni Spotlight

Coach Scot Davis Retires at the Top
The high school wrestlers he coached must have been truly inspired by him. In 25 years at Owatonna (MN), Scot Davis ‘74 coached his way to a record of 886-124-1, and racked up state titles (in the largest Minnesota classification) in 1998 and 2005. When you add in the other three high schools for which he coached over his 34-year career, the record is even more impressive: 984-149-4. He is the first coach to exceed 800 wins, and currently holds the record for most wins in national high school wrestling history.

After his student days at Augsburg, where he was All-American and team captain in 1973, Davis also earned Masters degrees from the University of Minnesota and the University of St. Thomas. Prior to coaching at Owatonna, he coached at Belcourt (ND), Bird Island-Lake Lillian (MN), and Hutchinson (MN). Over the years, his ability to draw participation and support from a broad spectrum within the community has built a solid youth program, a strong coaching staff, and a robust booster club—and, of course, a hefty group of talented wrestlers.

Davis has been named to several halls of fame (Dave Bartelma Minnesota Wrestling Coaches; and Region I Wrestling, charter member), as well as being honored with several Coach of the Year awards (National High School Coaches Association, 1998; Minnesota State AAA, 2005; and Wrestling USA Magazine’s National Coach of the Year, 2007). His wife Mary was honored as “Coach’s Wife of the Year” by Wrestling USA Magazine.

A former president and publicity director for the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association, Davis has had his own television program, has produced a regular wrestling newsletter and an annual “Owatonna Wrestling Book,” and initiated the “Owatonna Open,” which draws about 1200 wrestlers annually of all ages.

Julie Johnson ’98 at the Loring Theater, November 9
If you’re in the Twin Cities on November 9 and would like to hear some folk music with a new twist (would you believe, adding a nonintrusive flute?), head over to the Loring Theater (14th & Nicollet) to take in a show featuring Julie Johnson & The No-Accounts, a group of Auggie alums. Their music combines shades of 19th Century sounds with today’s sounds, resulting in original and regional music that will captivate you. Find more info at www.julieflute.com, or read a review at http://www.citypages.com/2011-07-20/music/julie-johnson-the-no-accounts/.
