Art Department - Study Abroad Opportunities

Sketching plein air at Abbaye de Boschaud, Dordogne, France.

Summer Session I, 2006

Summer session I 2006, students will have the opportunity to join professors Tara Christopherson and Phil Adamo, for three week’s study abroad in France. Historical aspects are explored and students draw on location at sites: Conques, Carcassonne, Collioure, Vernet-les-Bains, Montpellier, Avignon, Chartres, and numerous places of interest in Paris.

ART 100: Plein Air Sketching

We’ll seek to understand beauty in the path, places, and architecture of medieval spirituality by making direct sketches of sites visited.  In the aesthetic tradition of John Ruskin, we’ll try to understand where we are, and why it has meaning for us, by seeing through sketching.

HIS 440: Religious Expression in Medieval France

This course examines the history of medieval Christianity in its many expressions: the custom of pilgrimage, the practice of monasticism, the authority of the papacy, the response to heresy, and the traditions of the great cathedrals. By visiting monasteries, cathedrals, walled towns, and even by making a brief (four-day) pilgrimage on foot, students will gain a first-hand experience of the history they are studying.  This course fulfills a Critical Thinking (CT) Skill and Augsburg Experience requirement.
