Augsburg College Athletics 2003-04 Academic Achievements

At Augsburg College, the athletic program is part of an overall effort to help students grow as whole persons -- in mind, body and spirit. In that regard, the college takes special pride in the academic achievements of its student-athletes.

Several Auggie athletes in all sports were nominated to earn Academic All-District and Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) organization. In 2003-04, four Auggie athletes received Academic All-District V honors, among athletes from all non-Division I colleges and universities in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ontario and Manitoba. Joe Cullen (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) earned Academic All-District honors in two sports, as a second-team at-large selection in wrestling and as a second-team selection in football. Football players Adam Hoffmann (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) and Brandon Fox (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) also earned Academic All-District honors, with Hoffmann earning first-team recognition and Fox earning second-team recognition. Wrestler Mark Matzek (Jr., Ellsworth, Wis.) was named to the Academic All-District at-large second team.

For the seventh year in a row, Augsburg's wrestling team finished in the top 10 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association's Scholar All-America team program, finishing third among more than 100 NCAA Division III wrestling institutions with a 3.39 team grade-point-average. Augsburg has had 81 NWCA Scholar All-Americans since 1983 -- the most of any college in any division in the nation -- including 58 in the last six seasons. Named NWCA Scholar All-Americans in 2003-04 were Cullen, Matzek, Ryan Valek (So., Belle Plaine, Minn.) and Kirk Rall (So., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS).

Each of the past seven years, Augsburg has had a team grade-point-average of over 3.30, and Augsburg is the only school in NCAA Division III wrestling to finish in the top 10 both in competition on the mat and in the academic team competition in each of the seven years that the NWCA has awarded an academic team national championship.

Augsburg's men's and women's cross country teams both earned top-15 designation nationally for academic achievement. Augsburg's women's cross country squad earned NCAA Division III Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team honors with a team grade-point average of 3.598, the 11th-best team GPA in the country. Augsburg's women's team had the second-highest GPA among Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams listed among the 101 teams nationally that had a team GPA of 3.10 or higher. Augsburg's men's team had the top team GPA among MIAC schools to also earn CCCA All-Academic Team honors, as its 3.40 team GPA ranked 13th-best nationally among the 63 men's programs with a GPA of 3.10 or higher.

In women's hockey, Augsburg's Jana Ford (Jr., Eagan, Minn.), Dottie Gilkerson (Sr., Somerset, Wis.), Britt Pennington (So., St. Cloud, Minn./Tech HS) and Laura Prasek (Jr., Fridley, Minn.) earned American Women's Hockey Coaches Association National Scholar-Athlete awards.

In softball, earning National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete awards for Augsburg were: Melissa Lee (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS), Lindsay Ruliffson (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), Lisa Uehling (Fr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS), Trisha Pederson (Sr., Cloquet, Minn./Proctor HS), Trista Gundersen (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and Brenda Grabau (Jr., Fountain, Minn./Fillmore Central HS).

In 2003-04, 44 Augsburg student-athletes earned Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference recognition. To earn MIAC Academic All-Conference recognition, student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior or senior (no freshmen or first-year transfers) and must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 (4.00 scale). Athletes must be a member of a MIAC-sponsored varsity sports team and must have competed in at least 50 percent of a team's varsity regular-season contests in team sports or earn specific accomplishments in individual sports.
