2008 Auggie Award Finalists -- Men's Outstanding Athlete of the Year
Here are the four finalists for the Augsburg College Men's Outstanding Athlete of the Year award, to be given at the 2008 Auggie Awards ceremony at the Christensen Center on Monday, April 21.
Jordan Berg (JR, Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East HS), Football
All-MIAC second-team, Academic All-MIAC … Broke every single-season school passing record in 2007, with 292 passes, 502 attempts, 3,444 yards and 34 touchdowns … Yardage total is 2nd-most among any MIAC quarterback in history, TD total is 4th-most in MIAC history … Among D-III players nationally, ranked 3rd in total offense per-game (339.0 ypg), 4th in passing yardage per-game (344.4 ypg) and 5th in total passing yards (3,444) … Among all college football players (NCAA all-divisions and NAIA), ranked 11th in passing yardage per-game, 34th in total passing yardage and 13th in total offense yards per-game … Set Augsburg career record for passing TDs (47) and currently ranks 2nd in all other career passing categories (499 passes, 851 attempts, 5,551 yards).
Jon Cassens (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.), Men's Basketball
All-MIAC first-team … 1 of only 2 sophomores to be named All-MIAC first-team in 2008 … Led team and ranked 10th in MIAC (overall stats) in scoring (15.8 ppg, 11th in MIAC games-only with 16.1 ppg) … Ranked 2nd in MIAC in overall (4.76 apg) and 3rd in MIAC games-only (4.55 apg) assists … 119 assists are 2nd-most in single-season in school history since 1988-89 … Ranked 7th in MIAC in overall (1.42) and 8th in MIAC games-only (1.44) in assist-to-turnover ratio … Also had 37 3-pointers and 25 steals … Already ranks 37th in career scoring (742) and 7th in career 3-pointers (92) in school history … Scored in double-figures in 20 games, including career-high 29 in season finale.
Seth Flodeen (JR, Cannon Falls, Minn.), Wrestling
NCAA Division III national champion (125 pounds), Great Lakes Regional runner-up (125) … Claimed 43rd national title in Augsburg history with dramatic 2:07 pin in national championship match, the only pin in the 10 national title matches … Rallied from No. 5 seed with four victories in national tournament, including a 14-0, major-decision win in opening match and three wins over higher-seeded wrestlers … Finished 25-7 on season with 11 pins and 2 technical falls, reaching national title match for 2nd straight year (78-27 career) … Won titles at MSU Moorhead Dragon Open and St. John’s North Country Open, placed second at St. Cloud State Husky Open and Great Lakes Regional, placed third at Northwestern (Iowa) Red Raider/Paul Bartlett Invitational.
Royce Winford (JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS), Football
All-MIAC first-team, D3Football.com All-West Region first-team, D3Football.com All-America second team … Set single-season school record with 16 receiving TDs and became 1st Auggie receiver since 1998 to record a 1,000-yard receiving season … Finished with 101 receptions for 1,403 yards, both totals second-best in single-season in school history … Among D-III players nationally, ranked 2nd in receptions per-game (10.1), 3rd in receiving yards per-game (140.3) and 3rd in total receiving yards (1,403) … ranked 6th among all college football players (NCAA all-divisions and NAIA) in receptions per-game, 5th in receiving yards per-game and 8th in total receiving yardage … Single-game Augsburg and MIAC-record 20 receptions against Carleton was most in a single game among all college football players (regardless of division) nationally this season.
