2008 Auggie Award Finalists -- Men's Rookie of the Year

Auggie AwardsHere are the four finalists for the Augsburg College Men's Rookie of the Year award, to be given at the 2008 Auggie Awards ceremony at the Christensen Center on Monday, April 21. Rookie of the Year award is reserved for a first-year student-athlete (no transfers). For spring sports, first-year athletes from 2007 were considered for nomination.

As wide receiver, ranked 3rd on team in receiving, with 48 catches for 678 yards and 5 TDs (14.1 yards per-catch, 67.8 yards per-game) … Also recorded 3 kickoff returns for 34 yards (11.3 average) … Recorded two 100-yard receiving games -- 107 yards on 5 catches at St. John’s and 176 yards on 11 catches against Gustavus … Season-long 74-yard TD reception against St. John’s (longest reception by any Auggie receiver this season).

NCAA National Tournament qualifier (157 pounds), Great Lakes Regional runner-up … Finished with 28-9 record with 7 pins, 1 technical fall and 5 major decisions on season … Battled for varsity spot at 157 early, went 3-1 at NWCA Division III National Duals, including a 6-3 win over No. 9-ranked Jay Milz of Wisconsin-La Crosse, to clinch varsity spot … Went 3-1 at Great Lakes Regional to clinch first-ever national tournament berth.

All-MIAC first-team … 1 of only 2 first-year students to be named to 27-member All-MIAC first-team in 2007  … Led team in hitting with .395 (45-of-114) average, ranking 8th among MIAC players in overall stats … Also 8th among MIAC players in league-games-only batting average (.403) … Also led team with 17 RBI, 15 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs and .614 slugging percentage … 25 runs scored was 2nd-most on team … .960 fielding percentage (7 errors in 177 chances), and threw out 12 baserunners trying to steal (3rd-most among MIAC catchers) … Team-high 15 multiple-hit games and 4 multiple-RBI games … Closed season on 8-game hitting streak … Started 35 of team’s 37 games at catcher.

All-MIAC honorable-mention, MIAC All-Rookie Team … Scored team-high 11 goals, adding 11 assists for 22 points … Also team-high 5 power-play goals … Ranked 3rd in total scoring and goals by MIAC rookies in overall play and 4th in rookie scoring in MIAC games-only … Ranked 16th among MIAC players in overall scoring, 16th in MIAC games-only (7 goals) … Had team-high 7-game point streak to close season (4 goals, 6 assists, 10 points) … Had goal or assist in 15 games this season.
