FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/20/03) --
Joe Haehn (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) hit his fourth home run
of the season in dramatic fashion on Thursday, a game-winning, grand-slam home
run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Augsburg College a 17-13 triumph
over Washington & Jefferson College (Pa.) in a Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic
baseball game at Cape Coral Field.
With one out and the bases loaded,
Haehn crushed a homer to clear the bases, giving him a 2-for-4, six-RBI day,
to help Augsburg improve to 4-8-1 overall. The game was a scheduled nine-inning
affair.
Augsburg jumped out to a 9-3
lead after four innings, but watched as Washington & Jefferson rallied to
take the lead with 10 runs in a three-inning span.
Augsburg tied the game at 13-13
in the bottom of the ninth inning, as Andy Nelson (Fr., Waseca, Minn.)
doubled and scored on a single by Nick Rathmann (Sr., Waseca, Minn.),
and a two-run double by Jon Kozitza (Jr., North Mankato, Minn.) plated
Rathmann and Haehn to tie the game. Two walks, a single and fielder's choice
led to Haehn's heroics in the 10th inning.
Trailing 3-0, Augsburg scored
four runs in the bottom of the first inning. A two-run double by Haehn and RBI
single by Taylor Pagel (So., Cannon Falls, Minn.) highlighted the inning.
Augsburg sent 10 batters to
the plate and scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage
of three errors by Washington & Jefferson, a two-run single by Russ Bauer
(Sr., Faribault, Minn.) and a two-run double by Pagel. Augsburg scored a
single run in the fifth, when Haehn reached on an error and came across on a
single by Bauer. Bauer hgd two hits and drove in three runs, while Pagel went
3-for-6 with three RBI.
Collin Nash (Jr.,
Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) started for the Auggies and lasted five innings. Tyler
Suter (Fr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) gave up seven runs
-- though just two were earned -- in the sixth inning. Isaac Schmidt (So.,
Luverne, Minn.) pitched four and-a-third innings of relief to score the win
for the Auggies.
Augsburg returns to action on
Friday with a doubleheader against the University of Massachusetts-Boston at
4 p.m. at Cape Coral Field.
