STORM LAKE, Iowa (4/8/06) -- Tim Wahl (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI in the second game for Augsburg College, as the Auggies split a nonconference baseball doubleheader with Buena Vista University (Iowa) on Saturday afternoon at Storm Lake High School. Buena Vista (7-11 overall) won the first game 6-2, while Augsburg (12-8-1 overall) won the second game 10-4.

A five-run first inning, on four hits and an error, enabled the Auggies to take command of the second game and earn the split. RBI singles by Troy Deden (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) and Mark Bauer (Jr., Hastings, Minn.), along with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch by Andy Nelson (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) and a sacrifice fly by Andrew Werner (So., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS), gave the Auggies the early advantage.

Three more runs came across in the fifth, on an RBI single by Wahl, a balk and an RBI single by Ricky Schreier (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS). Augsburg scored twice in the seventh, on an RBI double by Brian Bambenek (Jr., St. Charles, Minn.) and a run-scoring single by Rick Andersen (So., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS).

Schreier, Andersen, Deden and Bambenek had two hits apiece in the game, with Bambenek adding a double.

Starting pitcher Pat Gornick (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) struck out six in five innings of work, with Adam Johnson (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Tyler Kraft (Jr., Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) pitching in relief. The pitchers limited Buena Vista to just six hits in the game.

Ryan Dupic had a home run for the Beavers in the second game, while Alex Fokken and Michael Barta had doubles.

In the first game, Buena Vista pitcher Barta limited the Auggies to just four hits, singles by Dusty Hinz (Fr., Richfield, Minn.), Darren Ginther (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), Deden and  Matt Johnson (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS). He collected three strukeouts while walking five. Augsburg stranded eight runners on base in the game.

Buena Vista's Zach Habben hit a two-run homer in the second inning. Another run came across for the Beavers in the fifth inning, and three more came across in the sixth, with a bases-loaded walk and a two-run single by Marc Goeders.

The Auggies scored in the first on an RBI single by Deden and in the sixth on a groundout by Mike Zaun (So., Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS). Pitcher Josh Remme (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) took the loss, pitching five innings. Eric Grant (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Kraft pitched in relief.

Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Tuesday (4/11) at 2:30 p.m. with a doubleheader at St. Mary's.
