Auggies Baseball 1997 Preview 1997 Schedule and Results 1997 Statistics 1997 Roster Head Coach Mark Strandemo Baseball team begins to rebuild The Augsburg baseball team is in a rebuilding phase and if results are not noticable in the win column early this season, there is no immediate need to panic. Why? Augsburg, which finished 9-26 overall and 5-15 in the MIAC last year, are venturing into one of the toughest early-season schedules it could find and it is doing so with a relatively young lineup. Augsburg starts the season with games against some of the top teams in division III baseball including, Upper Iowa, Rockhust, Ill., and MacMurray. Upper Iowa lost to eventual division III national champion William Patterson in 10 innings in the second round of last year's NCAA playoffs. MacMurray lost to Upper Iowa in the Central region finals. Youth is obvious on the Auggies roster, which contains 14 freshman, 10 sophomores, five juniors and only three seniors. Second-year coach Mark Strandemo has his work cut out. Strandemo does hava a pair of co-MVP's back to lead the way -- senior captain and shortstop Scott Glenn (Burnsville, Minn.) and sophomore centerfielder Scott Hvistendahl (Randolph, Minn./Cannon Falls). As a freshman, Hvistendahl led the team with a .348 batting average, 14 stolen bases and 25 runs. He was second in the MIAC in walks (13) and sixth in hits (23). Glenn batted .299 and he knocked in a team-high 18 RBI in a team-high 97 at-bats. Glenn led the MIAC in triples with three. On the pitching end of things, Augsburg will have to replace Joe Lavin, who once earned MIAC Player of the Week honors. Lavin pitched in a team-high 16 games. Sophomore Jeff Deuth (Northfield, Minn.) will be called upon to put in some quality innings for the Auggies to find some success. Deuth started 12 games last year and threw a team-high five complete games. Several newcomers will be called upon this year. Some names to watch include: a pair of stars from Rochester Mayo, pitcher Jesse Truax and third baseman Joe Seehusen; and a trio of players from Roseville inluding, catcher Trevor Johnson, outfielder Jim Jansen and pitcher Jeff Deeb.
