Augsburg College Athletics Staff -- Joe Austin
Joe Austin (Concordia-St. Paul '01) joins the Augsburg coaching staff for his first season as the team's offensive coordinator in 2004. Austin most recently served for the last four seasons as an assistant coach at Concordia University-St. Paul, most recently as co-offensive coordinator. The Golden Bears, an NCAA Division II squad, had a 32-12 record in Austin's four seasons. In 2003, the Golden Bears won the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference co-championship (with Winona State) and earned a trip to the Mineral Water Bowl for the first time in school history, finishing 8-4 overall. Under Austin's offense, the Golden Bears finished in the top 25 nationally in Division II in total offense in each of the last three seasons, including finishing sixth nationally in 2003 (474.6 yards per game) and seventh in 2002 (447.8 yards per game). The Golden Bears ranked 20th nationally in scoring offense in 2003 (35.0 points per game), 13th-best in 2002 (35.3 points per game). Austin's offenses set more than 70 individual and team school records -- virtually every school receiving, passing and rushing record. In addition to his offensive coordinator duties, Austin also served as a recruiter, video/statistics coordinator, summer camp/clinic coach and fundraiser for the Golden Bears. Austin also served as Concordia-St. Paul's sports information director in the 2002-03 school year, and as assistant SID/assistant to director of athletics in the 2000-01 school year. Austin played two seasons as a quarterback at St. Ambrose University (Iowa), earning All-Mid-States Athletic Association honors as a sophomore (1998). That season, he passed for school records of 2,197 yards and 17 touchdowns, despite playing six games with a broken vertebrae in his back, an injury that subsequently ended his playing career after reconstructive surgery at the end of the season. Austin earned his bachelor's degree in communication studies from Concordia-St. Paul in 2001, and earned his master's degree in organizational management from Concordia-St. Paul in 2004. Austin and his wife, Marissa, live in Eagan, Minn.
