Augsburg College Athletics Staff -- Sam Barber
Sam Barber (Upper Iowa '95) was named the eighth head coach in the history of the Augsburg College wrestling program in March 2007. The 2007-08 season will be Barber's seventh at Augsburg; he previously served as an assistant coach and associate head coach on Jeff Swenson's staff. During his Augsburg tenure, Barber has been part of three national championships and two national runner-up squads, and has coached 46 All-Americans and 13 national champions. In 2006, Barber was named Division III Co-National Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Also in 2006, Barber served as head coach of the NWCA's Division III Cultural Exchange trip to Ukraine. In 1997, he served as an assistant coach on the NWCA Cultural Exchange trip to England. Barber has served on the staff of the Minnesota/USA Wrestling Minnesota Storm team since 1997, as FILA Junior/University Director for Minnesota/USA Wrestling, Junior National Freestyle head coach and team leader, and as the assistant coach for the Senior Athlete Program. He has also served as a personal coach of 2003-04 USA national team member Jesus Wilson, who has earned numerous national and international freestyle wrestling honors. He also serves as a camp director, staff leader and camp counselor at the J Robinson Intensive Wrestling Camps. Barber, a 1995 graduate of Upper Iowa University, served as his alma mater's head coach in the 1999-2000 season, with his team finishing 12th at the NCAA Division III national tournament. He earned his master's degree in educational leadership and experiential education at Minnesota State University, Mankato in 2004. While there, he served as a graduate assistant coach in 2000-01. The Mavericks finished sixth in the NCAA Division II national tournament in 2001, with one individual national titlist and four All-Americans.
