Keith Bateman (Bethel '98) enters his fourth season as the leader of Augsburg's baseball team. He also serves as Augsburg's director of concessions and athletic merchandising.

Bateman has been the architect of a revival of fortunes for the Augsburg baseball program during his tenure. Taking a team that had went 18-53-2 in the previous two seasons (9-24-2 in 2003, 9-29 in 2002), Bateman's Auggies finished 16-22 in his first year in 2004, then went 24-18 in 2005, qualifying for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason playoffs for the first time, where they finished second. The Auggies' 24 wins marked just the third 20-win campaign for the squad since 1992, and the most wins for the Auggies in a single season since its last MIAC regular-season title campaign of 1987 (31-10). Bateman was named MIAC Co-Coach of the Year in 2005. Augsburg went 18-19-1 in 2006.

A three-time All-MIAC selection (1996-98) at Bethel, Bateman had served as an assistant coach at his alma mater for three seasons (2000-02) and as a volunteer assistant coach at MIAC regular-season champion St. Thomas during the 2003 season.

Bateman served as head coach for the Centennial AAU traveling youth baseball team in the 2002 and 2003 seasons, serving on teams that finished seventh and sixth nationally those years. He served as an instructor at the Greater Twin Cities Baseball Schools from 1994-2003.

At Bethel, Bateman earned All-Midwest Region honors as a catcher in his senior season (1998). He earned All-MIAC honors three seasons and was team captain his junior and senior years. He earned numerous team honors in his career, including team MVP his junior and senior years, team Mr. Defense all four years, team Rookie of the Year his freshman season and team Most Respected Player his junior and senior years. Bateman holds the Bethel career record for hits, along with single-season school records for hits and batting average.

A 1994 graduate of St. Paul Harding HS, he was a state Lions' All-Star his senior season. He received his bachelor's degree in physical education from Bethel in 1998. Bateman and his wife, Laura, a teacher in the Mounds View School District, have two children -- son Brett and daughter Kaylee, and live in Arden Hills, Minn.
