Augsburg College Athletics Staff -- Tim Gormley
Tim Gormley (St. Mary's '87) began his duties as the third head coach in the three-decade history of Augsburg College softball in June 2006. Gormley will also serve on the Augsburg athletics staff as director of the college's intramural and recreational sports program. Gormley, who served as a softball assistant coach at the University of St. Thomas for six seasons, replaces Carol Enke, who resigned at the end of the 2006 season after serving for 21 years as Augsburg's head coach. Gormley served as an assistant coach under John Tschida for nine seasons -- three seasons (1996-98) at St. Mary's University and six seasons (2000-06) at the University of St. Thomas. The Tommies won NCAA Division III national titles in the 2004 and 2005 seasons and finished second nationally in 2006 with Gormley as part of the coaching staff, while winning five of the last six Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season titles. He was also a part of MIAC title teams at St. Mary's in 1997 and 1998. Gormley has been a part of seven NCAA Division III national tournament teams in his nine years of collegiate coaching. His college teams have produced a 343-59 overall record, 183-15 in MIAC play. Tschida's Tommie staff was named Division III National Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association in both 2004 and 2005. The Tommies went 46-4 in 2004, winning their final 41 games in a row, and went 43-6 with wins in 32 of their final 33 games in 2005. The Tommies became just the second Division III softball team to ever repeat as national champions (Eastern Connecticut State was the first in 1985 and 1986). In 2006, the Tommies tied a Division III record with 48 wins, going 48-4 overall, 21-1 in MIAC play, finishing second nationally and claiming their fourth top-five national finish in the last five seasons. The Tommies hit 72 home runs as a team, shattering the old Division III record of 48 team round-trippers. Gormley also spent two seasons (1999-2000) as head coach at Mounds View (Minn.) High School. He has served as head coach of the Northern Lights 18-under fastpitch softball team for the past two seasons, and has served as a clinician and umpire for the past decade. He also served as an ice hockey official at the high school and collegiate levels during the past decade. Gormley most recently served as physical education teacher and athletic director at St. Jude of the Lake School in Mahtomedi, Minn., a K-8 school. He previously taught at St. Agnes grade and junior high schools in St. Paul. He received his bachelor's degree from St. Mary's University in 1987 and his master's degree from St. Mary's in 1998. "As I look to the future, I am thrilled to begin a new chapter in my coaching career," Gormley said. "I look forward to working with the young ladies here at Augsburg. I have had the opportunity to work with a couple of them in the past, so I know them and they know me. I think anyone who plays for me will find that I am very passionate about the game. I enjoy watching players improve while focusing on the fundamentals. Hard work and a willingness to put in extra time at improving their talents have always been a part of my teams. I am confident you will see that here at Augsburg. I am honored to be replacing a very good coach. I look forward to continuing the great tradition of quality softball that Carol Enke has maintained the past 21 years."
