Aaron Griess (Colorado College '93) was named Augsburg's men's basketball head coach on May 4, 2005, bringing a solid background of playing and coaching experience to the Auggies.

Prior to coming to Augsburg, Griess served for nine seasons at Chaminade University, an NCAA Division II program in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was an assistant coach for four seasons (1996-2000) and head coach for five seasons (2000-05), compiling a 71-61 record, the second-most victories by a coach in program history.

Griess, who also served as athletic director for Chaminade's 10-sport program, helped to turn the Silverswords into a consistent contender in the Pacific West Conference, while also facing the challenge of playing several Division I programs early in the season in the school's fabled EA Sports Maui Invitational tournament.

In his first season (2000-01), the Silverswords finished 16-11, the school's first winning season since 1987. His team finished 16-11 again in 2001-02, and in the 2003-04 season, his Silverswords gained national attention with a 52-49 upset victory over Division I Villanova (Pa.) in the opening game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational, Chaminade's first Maui Invitational win in 11 years and only its fourth in the 20-year history of the tournament, an event started as a legacy to the Silverswords' epic upset of Virginia in 1982.

Chaminade finished 16-11 in 2004-05, a season which included a 70-61 win over Division I Coastal Carolina. On a team with just three seniors, Chaminade averaged 85.0 points per game -- the 11th-highest total in Division II -- while giving up 79.5 points per game in 2004-05.

Chaminade's squad was also a solid performer in the classroom. In 2002, Chaminade gained national distinction among NCAA Division II schools for having the highest improvement in student-athlete graduation rates.

Griess earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Colorado College in 1993, and received his master's degree in physical education (athletic administration emphasis) from Loras (Iowa) in 1996. At Loras, he served as a graduate assistant coach in the men's basketball program.

As a player at Colorado College, Griess was a three-year starter at point guard and team captain his junior and senior years. In 1991-92, the Tigers won a school-record 22 games (22-5) and won their first NCAA Division III tournament game in school history. Griess finished his career as Colorado College's career record-holder in steals with 131 (he now stands third in school history in the category), while standing fifth in career assists (321) and 25th in career scoring (755 points) in 88 career games. Tiger teams he played on finished 62-41 in his four seasons.

A native of Lincoln, Neb., Griess and his wife, Tracey, have four children, Madison, McClain, Makena and MacIntyre.
