Augsburg College Athletics Staff -- Greg Holker
Greg Holker (Gustavus Adolphus '00) enters his fifth season as the Augsburg College men's soccer head coach in 2008. He also serves the college as athletic facilities assistant manager. Holker has led a dynamic rebuilding of the Auggie men's soccer program since being named head coach in 2004. Taking a team that had won just five games in the year before he arrived, Holker's teams have shown strong improvement in each of his three seasons, including a 13-3-3 overall record and first-ever berth in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference four-team postseason playoffs in 2006. He was named MIAC Coach of the Year in 2006 by his conference coaching colleagues. Holker's career coaching record of 35-31-7 is now third-best in Augsburg history. The Auggies' 13 wins in 2006 were the second-most in a single season in school history, behind only the 15 wins in the team's MIAC championship season of 1975 (15-2-1), and the 13 points in league play (5-2-3) are the most for the Auggies since their last MIAC title season in 1980 (11-1-3 overall, 9-0-3 MIAC, 21 points). During his Augsburg tenure, Holker has coached six All-MIAC first-team and six All-MIAC honorable-mention players, two D3Kicks.com All-West Region players (Pascaul Venter, Nick Manders), a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-West Region player (Venter), and a D3Kicks.com Division III All-American (Venter). In addition, his squads have also succeeded academically, with the Auggies earning the NSCAA's Team Academic Award in both 2006 and 2007. Manders earned NSCAA Academic All-Region, CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District and CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors, while two other players (Alex Hildebrandt, Andrew Connor) have also earned regional academic honors. Prior to coming to Augsburg, Holker served as head coach at the Academy of Holy Angels High School in Richfield, Minn., in 2003. He earned Minnesota Division II Coach of the Year honors from the NSCAA in 2003, after leading Holy Angels to a 13-4-2 record. Holker served two seasons as men's soccer assistant coach at his alma mater, Gustavus Adolphus College, from 2000-01. While at Gustavus, the Gusties won the 2000 MIAC title and were ranked as high as 10th nationally in the NCAA Division III polls. In his two seasons as an assistant coach, Gustavus tallied a 28-8-1 record. He has been a member of the Minnesota Olympic Development Program staff since 2003 (currently coaching the '92 boys' team), and holds an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, NSCAA Level II GK Diploma, and a USSF 'B' license. Holker is also a trainer for the Minnesota Thunder Academy and acts as an instructor for the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association's coaching licensure program. As a player at Gustavus Adolphus College from 1996-99, Holker earned NSCAA All-Region and All-MIAC honors his senior season. He started 61 of his 69 career games in the midfield and earned a spot on the 14-member Gustavus All-History Soccer Team in 2002. Holker earned his bachelor's degree in English from Gustavus in 2000 and is nearing completion of his master's degree in human performance from Minnesota State University-Mankato. Holker and his wife, Connie, live in Minneapolis, Minn.
