Thanh Pham (Augsburg '97, pronounced
TANG FAHM) was named interim head coach of the Auggie volleyball
team in 1999, and will join Ryan Dehnel as a co-head coach
this season.
Pham, 25, a
math teacher at Wayzata, Minn., Central Middle School, was an
assistant coach at Augsburg from 1994-96.
Pham graduated
from Augsburg in 1997 with a degree in secondary education/mathematics.
He has extensive volleyball playing and coaching experience.
As a player in high school, he captained an 18-and-under Junior
Olympic team (Razor's Edge) and earned all-state and all-star
honors. As a coach, Pham has guided several Junior Olympic girls
and boys teams, in addition to coaching the junior varsity at
Anoka and Wayzata high schools.
While at Augsburg,
he was a member of the Auggies' wrestling team, which won the
national championship in 1995 and 1997. He compiled a 30-17 career
record as a wrestler. As a prep wrestler at Osseo HS, he qualified
for the state tournament twice, finishing fifth in the state
meet in 1993 and setting a school record for career takedowns.
