Augsburg College Athletics Staff -- Mike Schwartz
Mike Schwartz (Augsburg '83), who served as men's hockey head coach at Augsburg for 10 seasons (1996-2006), has served as the college's director of athletic facilities since 2004. In this capacity, Schwartz manages the day-to-day operations for the Augsburg Ice Arena, Si Melby Hall and Edor Nelson Field. Schwartz compiled a 124-110-30 record during his Augsburg coaching tenure. Teams he coached made appearances in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason playoffs six times, compiling a 80-61-18 record in conference play. In his second year on the Auggies' bench in 1997-98, the Auggies won the MIAC regular-season title and playoff championship, qualifying for the NCAA Division III national tournament and finishing fourth. That season, Schwartz was named College Division National Coach of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association. At Augsburg, Schwartz coached four Division III All-Americans -- Todd Cary (1998), Ryan McIntosh (1998), Jaro Cesky (2003) and Aaron Johnson (2006). As a player at Augsburg, Schwartz was a member of the 1981-82 NAIA national championship team, playing under legendary Augsburg head coach Ed Saugestad. As a coach, he worked at White Bear Lake (Minn.) High School for four seasons (1992-93 to 1995-96), leading the Bears to three consecutive Minnesota state tournament appearances (1994, 1995, 1996), earning Section 3AA Coach of the Year honors all three seasons. He also coached at St. Paul Johnson HS from 1986-90, leading the Governors to two conference and Twin Cities titles. Prior to coaching at White Bear Lake, Schwartz coached professional hockey in Italy, in the USHL in Sioux City, Iowa, and in high school hockey in Alaska, where he earned state coach of the year honors in 1996. He also has scouted for the NHL’s San Jose Sharks (1990-92). Schwartz and his wife, Judy, have four children -- Matt, Hannah, Sophie and Ellie -- and live in Woodbury, Minn.
