Cathy Skinner (California-Davis '89) brings 16 seasons of volleyball coaching experience, including eight years at the NCAA Division I level, to her position as Augsburg volleyball head coach, entering her second season in 2004.

"I'm looking forward to building the program here," Skinner said. "I feel that Augsburg and the Twin Cities have a lot to offer, and there is so much volleyball talent in Minnesota. It seems like there is a strong sense of community here at Augsburg, and I'd like to carry that sense of community into the gym by creating a fun, competitive and successful volleyball program."

From 1995-98, Skinner served as head coach at NCAA Division I Fordham University (Bronx, N.Y.), where she led the Rams in a transition from the non-scholarship Patriot League to the highly-competitive Atlantic 10 Conference. During her four-season tenure, Fordham went 40-84, improving its position in three of her four years in the Atlantic 10 with a team that had won just seven matches in the two seasons prior to her arrival.

She was hired as the first full-time head coach at Fordham, and was a key component of the Rams' improvement in their first seasons in scholarship-level volleyball in Division I. She developed a reputation as a solid recruiter, both nationally and internationally, during her years in New York City. She reorganized the Rams' program, developing long-range player goals and off-season training programs while also upgrading the team's schedule.

From 1999-2001, Skinner served as the first assistant coach at Princeton University (N.J.), an Ivy League volleyball powerhouse. During her three seasons, Princeton won two Ivy League titles and advanced to NCAA Division I tournament play twice. Princeton went 58-25 (21-7 in Ivy League matches) in her three seasons.

Afer a family move to the Twin Cities, Skinner served as an assistant coach under former Division I coach Stephanie Schleuder at Macalester College in 2002.

Skinner joined the Division I coaching ranks in 1994, when she served one season as an assistant coach at Drexel University (Pa.). Before becoming a collegiate coach, she served as head coach at San Ramon Valley High School in Danville, Calif., in 1992-93, and served as head coach and administrator at junior volleyball clubs in Sacramento, Davis, Berkeley and Danville, Calif., from 1988-93.

A 1989 graduate of the University of California-Davis, Skinner earned her bachelor's degree in psychology. She played collegiately for three seasons (1984-86) at UC-Davis and also played on an Athletes In Action team that competed in South America in the summer of 1987.

A native of Fremont, Calif., Skinner grew up in the Philippines, Hawaii and Monterey, Calif., before her family settled in the San Francisco Bay Area when she was 13. She currently lives in St. Paul, Minn., with her husband, Matt, and three children -- Alexandra, Miranda and Samuel.
