MINNEAPOLIS
(11/14/00) -- Putting together 352 yards of total offense, the
Bethel College football team claimed its first Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference football championship ever, staving off Augsburg
College 25-20 on Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson
Field.
Bethel finishes the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record,
9-0 in the MIAC, for its first unbeaten conference campaign ever.
Bethel began playing in the MIAC in 1978. Augsburg finishes its
season with a 3-7 overall record, the school's first sub-.500
campaign since 1996 and just the second sub-.500 finish in the
last eight years.
The Royals will advance to their first-ever NCAA Division III
national playoffs as the automatic qualifier from the MIAC. The
NCAA will announce national playoff bids on Sunday afternoon.
Scott Kirchoff (So., Hutchinson, Minn.) completed 25 of
42 passes for 248 yards and two first-half touchdowns, as Bethel
built a 15-7 halftime lead. Augsburg kept the game close throughout,
taking advantage of two touchdown passes to Mark Johnson
(Jr., Hastings, Minn.). But the Royals scored on each drive after
an Augsburg score in the second half to clinch the victory.
Kirchoff threw two first-half touchdown passes, a 10-yarder to
Joel Olson (So., Becker, Minn.) in the first quarter and
as six-yarder to Deon Jordan (Sr., Long Beach, Calif./Jordan
HS) late in the second quarter.
The Royal scores bracketed a bit of trickery by the Auggies, as
halfback Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix
Lutheran HS) threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Auggie quarterback
Paul Tetzloff (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) with 6:45 left in
the first half.
Trailing 15-7 in the third quarter, Augsburg put together a seven-play,
57-yard drive to score, capping the drive on a 29-yard pass from
backup quarterback John Goodale (Jr., Buffalo, Minn.) to
Johnson to cut the lead to 15-13. But just 1:14 later, the Royals
surged ahead again, as Mike Johnson (So., Pine City, Minn.)
busted through the line for a 54-yard scoring scamper with 5:42
left.
Augsburg scored late in the game, on a seven-yard pass from Tetzloff
to Mark Johnson, but the Auggies could not convert the ensuing
onside kick, and the Royals capped the scoring on a 28-yard field
goal by Seth Olson (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS)
and a subsequent interception by Ben Kidd (Jr., Roseville,
Minn.).
Tetzloff had his best passing game of the season for the Auggies,
completing 15 of 29 passes for 203 yards. However, he was intercepted
twice. Goodale also threw two interceptions. Ben Matthews
(Sr., Milaca, Minn.) scored two of the pickoffs for the Royals,
giving him a nation-high 15 interceptions to complete the regular
season.
Mark Johnson had 113 receiving yards on six catches for the Auggies,
while Desman Oakley (Sr., Indianola, Iowa) had five catches
for 81 yards in his final collegiate game.
For the Royals, Mike Johnson had 94 rushing yards on 12 carries,
capped by the 54-yard scoring scamper in the third quarter. Jordy
Hage (Jr., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) had eight catches
for 60 yards.
Jeff Bormes (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had
16 tackles (11 solo) to lead all players. Jon Foss (Jr.,
Hinton, Iowa) and Kidd had 10 tackles apiece.
Augsburg's defense was paced by Larry Lyden (Jr., New Brighton,
Minn./Irondale HS) and Shane Gunderson (Jr., Faribault,
Minn.), who had 10 tackles each. Joe Souba (Sr., Hayward,
Wis.) and Brent Peroutka (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) had nine
tackles each.

THE GAME: The
Augsburg College Auggies (3-6 overall, 3-5 MIAC) take on the Bethel
College Royals overall, 9-0 overall, 8-0 MIAC) in a Minnesota
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday,
Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field (2,000)
in Minneapolis, Minn.
COACHES: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg (Augsburg '62) is in
his 10th season and currently has a 49-51 career mark. Bethel
coach Steve Johnson (Bethel '79) is in his 12th season and currently
has a 76-41-1 career mark.
RADIO: There is no radio coverage of Augsburg football this season.
LAST WEEK: Augsburg dropped to 3-6 overall with a 37-13 loss to
Concordia-Moorhead at the Metrodome last Saturday. Bethel clinched
an NCAA Division III national playoff berth and at least a share
of the MIAC championship with a 49-31 triumph over St. Thomas
on Friday night, also at the Metrodome.
SERIES: Augsburg leads the all-time series 13-9-3. The Auggies
and Royals played three times in the late 40s and 50s when the
Royals were an independent team, all Augsburg wins (1949, 1953,
1954); the two schools have met each year since 1978, when Bethel
joined the MIAC. Bethel has won five of the last six games in
the series, including a 31-14 win last year at Bethel. Augsburg's
last win was a 56-22 triumph over the Royals at the Metrodome
during the 1997 season. In games played at Augsburg since 1978,
the Auggies are 5-4-1 against the Royals.
LAST YEAR: Josh Savageau rushed for 126 yards and scored three
touchdowns Saturday, part of a 407-yard offensive performance
for Bethel, as the host Royals cruised in the second half to a
come-from-behind, 31-14 win over Augsburg in Arden Hills, Minn.,
on Nov. 6, 1999. Savageau scored on runs of 20 and 38 yards, as
well as catching a 23-yard pass from Bart Becker. Bethel rallied
from a 7-3 halftime deficit to outscore the Auggies 28-7 in the
second half.
Becker threw for 238 yards, completing 20 of 29 passes with just
one pickoff. His other passing touchdown came on a third-quarter
63-yard strike to Jordy Hage, one play after Augsburg had taken
a 14-9 lead on a seven-yard scoring strike from Paul Tetzloff
to Desman Oakley. Bethel compiled 311 of its 407 yards of total
offense in the second half. Augsburg was limited to just 277 yards
of offense in the contest (27 rushing, 250 passing).
Late in the first half, Augsburg took advantage of a 74-yard pass
from Tetzloff to Mark Johnson, Augsburg's second-longest pass
completion of the season, which put the ball on the Bethel 1-yard
line. Two plays later, Tetzloff scored on a one-yard sneak to
give the Auggies a 7-3 halftime edge. Johnson led the Auggies
with 158 receiving yards on seven receptions, the most yards gained
by an Auggie receiver and just the second 100-yard-plus receiving
performance by an Auggie this year Tetzloff completed 19 of 32
passes for 250 yards in the game.
However, the Auggies could not muster much offensive momentum
in the second half. Tetzloff was sacked five times and intercepted
twice by the Royal defense. Gary Stone had seven tackles (all
solo) and 1.5 sacks to lead the Royal defense. Ben Kidd had eight
tackles (seven solo), and Kirk Midthun had seven tackles (all
solo). Augsburg's defense was paced by Jake Kern, who had eight
tackles (all solo), and Rob Just, who had eight tackles (seven
solo) and a forced fumble and fumble recovery in the fourth quarter.
Scott Archambault added seven tackles (six solo).
AUGGIES DROP 37-13 DECISION TO CONCORDIA AT METRODOME: Scoring
28 points in the second quarter to rally from a 7-0 deficit, Concordia-Moorhead
cruised to a 37-13 victory over Augsburg College last Saturday
afternoon at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. Down 7-0 at the
end of the first quarter, the Cobbers pulled away with four touchdowns
in the second period, scoring on each of its drives after holding
Augsburg to three plays and a punt on each of its drives. Josh
Oien rushed for a 21-yard score, followed by a Jason Braaten two-yard
run. Quarterback Jeff Hertel threw two touchdown passes to complete
the second-quarter scoring burst -- a 16-yard pass to Adam Strainer
and a 50-yard strike to Raleigh Schmidt with 37 seconds left in
the half.
Augsburg struggled offensively most of the afternoon, turning
the ball over three times (twice on interceptions, once on a fumble),
while converting just five of 18 third downs and one of three
fourth downs. The Auggies could only muster a 21-yard scoring
pass from Paul Tetzloff (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) to Mark Johnson
(Jr., Hastings, Minn.) late in the first quarter. Tetzloff threw
for just 64 yards, completing only four of 21 passes while being
sacked six times, before being replaced in the third quarter by
Dave Fransen (So., Farmington, Minn.). He found Johnson on an
81-yard scoring pass midway through the fourth quarter.
However, on the extra-point attempt, Matt Palmen blocked the kick
and returned it to the Augsburg 45, where he latereled it to Mike
Schwab, who returned it the rest of the way for a two-point defensive
extra point. It was the first defensive extra point ever scored
against Augsburg. Robert Clark returned the ensuing kickoff 46
yards, which set up the Cobbers' final score of the day, a one-yard
scoring plunge by Len Crouse with 7:18 remaining.
Johnson led all players with 152 receiving yards for the Auggies
on four catches, including the 81-yard strike from Fransen. Fransen
threw for 139 yards.
Brent Peroutka (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) had nine tackles (eight
solo) to lead the Auggies, while Joe Souba (Sr., Hayward, Wis.)
had eight tackles (five solo) and Larry Lyden (Jr., New Brighton,
Minn./Irondale HS) had seven tackles (six solo).
RECORD-WATCHING: Running back Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis,
Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) has a chance to make school history
on Saturday. He enters today's game with 471 career rushes for
1,771 career yards. With just 26 carries (he is averaging 18 carries
per game this year), he will match the career mark for carries
(497, set by Wayne Graves from 1970-73). Warden's 1,771 career
rushing yards place him fourth in school history; the career rushing
record is 2,226 yards, set by Marty Alger from 1991-95. Just four
Auggies have ever had 400 or more career rushes and just five
Auggies have ever rushed for more than 1,500 yards in their careers.
Warden has 163 carries for 635 yards and three touchdowns this
season.
Two Auggies are pursuing single-season and career records for
quarterback sacks this year. Andy Howard (Sr., Waseca, Minn.)
has a team-high 10.5 sacks this year; the single-season record
is 14, set by Bob Anderson in 1995. Howard has 14.5 sacks on his
career to put him fifth-best all-time. Matt Chappuis (Jr., Faribault,
Minn.) has seven sacks this season and 20.5 on his career, putting
him third-best all-time; Anderson's 28.5 from 1992-95 is the record.
AUGGIES TOUGH INDOORS, ON FAKE GRASS: Augsburg is the only MIAC
team to play on artificial turf for its home games. At Anderson-Nelson
Field, affectionately known as "The Cage" by Auggies,
Augsburg has put together at 26-20 record since 1991. Since the
field opened in 1984, Augsburg is 29-47-1 at home. On artificial
turf (including games at the Metrodome and Fargodome), Augsburg
is 33-24 since 1991 and 36-55-1 since 1984.
17 AUGGIES PLAYING THEIR FINAL HOME GAME SATURDAY: Augsburg closes
its 2000 football season with the hopes of playing a spoiler role,
facing the NCAA Division III playoff-bound Bethel Royals. Saturday's
contest is also the final home game for 17 Augsburg seniors. While
this year's 3-6 record may be a disappointment, this group of
seniors have definitely made their mark in Augsburg football history.
The seniors were a part of Augsburg's first MIAC championship
since 1928 (as freshmen in 1997), had three straight winning seasons
and could end their careers as the winningest class in school
history. The Class of 2000 seniors (1996-99) and the Class of
1999 seniors (1995-98) each had a 25-17 record; the 17 seniors
have a 25-16 mark entering the final game of their college careers.
* Todd Boerboom (Sr., Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS), son of
Ron and Marian Boerboom -- Boerboom, a All-MIAC second-team selection
last year, has started on the offensive line for all four seasons,
earning second-team All-MIAC honors last season and All-MIAC honorable
mention honors in 1997. A business management major with a 3.65
GPA, Boerboom has been honored twice for his academic excellence
with selection to the Verizon Academic All-District second team
for football, along with earning Academic All-MIAC Honor Roll
honors twice. He is a team co-captain this season.
* Andy Hansen (Sr., Mankato, Minn./East HS), son of Nancy and

SCOUTING THE ROYALS: On the viture of the school's second victory
in a row over St. John's (43-36 on Oct. 28) and last Saturday's
49-31 Metrodome victory over St. Thomas, Bethel College has clinched
at least a share of the MIAC championship and an automatic bid
to the 28-team NCAA Division III national playoffs. The Royals
can finish with an unbeaten regular season and the outright conference
championship with a win this afternoon. Playoff bids will be announced
Sunday morning, but it is expected that with a victory Saturday,
Bethel would host a first-round playoff game next Saturday in
Arden Hills, Minn.
The Royals, much like Augsburg, struggled over the past several
decades in football before a revival in the 1990s. Consecutive
8-2 seasons have been capped with this year's unbeaten campaign
and the school's first-ever national playoff berth.
"This is new territory for us," head coach Steve Johnson
told the St. Paul Pioneer Press newspaper after clinching the
playoff berth last week. "Not too long ago, we were a long
way from where we are now."
How have the Royals gotten to this point? On the strength of a
high-flying offense that has scored 30 or more points in seven
of its nine victories, including 43 or more points in the last
four wins in a row. Quarterback Scott Krichoff (So., Hutchinson,
Minn.) assumed the starting quarterback role this year and has
thrown for 2,203 yards and 20 touchdowns. Running back Josh Savageau
(Sr., Blaine, Minn.) has rushed for 576 yards and six scores this
season.
On defense, the Royals have been strong, but have allowed a surprising
360 yards per game this year. Defensive lineman Rick Meyer (Jr.,
Dodge Center, Iowa/Triton HS) leads the team with 6.5 sacks, while
Ben Matthews (Sr., Milaca, Minn.) leads the nation with 13 interceptions.
NEXT WEEK: The season is over for Augsburg football. However,
Bethel will continue its season in the 28-team NCAA Division III
national playoffs, which begin next Saturday, Nov. 18. Playoff
bids will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 12, and will be available
on the NCAA's web site -- http://www.ncaa.org/.
