MINNEAPOLIS
(10/27/01) -- Mark Johnson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) scored
on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Johnny Goodale (Sr., Buffalo,
Minn.) early in the third quarter, the only score Augsburg College
would need in claiming a 7-0 win over Hamline University in a
Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon
at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
The Auggies
won despite turning the ball over seven times -- two interceptions
and five fumbles -- to improve to 4-4 overall and 4-3 in MIAC
play. Hamline drops to 1-7 overall and 1-6 in the MIAC. Augsburg
has won the last six games in a row in the all-time series against
Hamline, though the margin of victory in the six wins has averaged
just 8.2 points.
Goodale, who
replaced Augsburg starting quarterback Dave Fransen (So.,
Farmington, Minn.) midway through the second quarter, completed
14 of 24 passes with an interception for 145 yards to lead the
Auggies, who accumulated 330 yards of total offense in spite of
the seven turnovers.
Meanwhile, Augsburg's
defense limited Hamline's offense to just 129 total yards -- 32
passing and 97 rushing -- and netted three interceptions, while
collecting four quarterback sacks.
The Auggies'
lone score came after Hamline turned the ball over as a fake punt
pass went incomplete. A 15-yard pass to Johnson put the ball on
the Hamline 40-yard line, and a 23-yard rush by T.J. Bramwell
(Jr., Tomah, Wis.) placed the ball on the 17. A fumbled snap
by Goodale was recovered by center Bob Eckstrom (Jr., Elk
River, Minn.) at the Hamline 19, and two plays later, Goodale
found Johnson on a sprint pattern to the corner of the end zone
for the touchdown.
Johnson had
eight catches for 98 yards to lead Augsburg's receivers, while
Sammy Gross (Jr., Springfield, Minn.) caught three passes
for 36 yards. Ben Paul (So., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS)
led Augsburg's rushers with 90 yards on 17 carries, including
a 37-yard rumble in the second quarter. Bramwell had 58 rushing
yards on 15 carries.
Kyle Koch
(Jr.,
Austin, Minn.) led the Auggie defense with two sacks and 5.5 tackles
(four solo). Larry Lyden (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale
HS) had 8.5 tackles (six solo) and an interception, and Mitch
Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) had 5.5 tackles (one
solo). Joe Cullen (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Luke
Wittrock (Sr., Boone, Iowa) also had interceptions for the
Auggies, and Cullen and Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.)
had a sack each. Matt Chappuis (Sr., Faribault, Minn.)
had a blocked punt.
Augsburg turned
the ball over on five of its seven first-half drives, adding a
field-goal attempt blocked by Hamline's Josh Richards (Fr.,
Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) on the final play of the first
half. Two of its turnovers ended up inside Hamline territory,
including a drive ending on a fumble inside the Hamline 13 in
the closing minutes.
Hamline's offense
was paced by the rushing of Joey Kvamme (Sr., Warren, Minn.),
who had 95 yards on 20 carries. Nathan Dammann (So., Maynard,
Minn./MACCRAY HS) completed six passes for just 24 yards before
being relieved by Andrew Kunzmann (Jr., Chisago City, Minn./Chisago
Lakes HS) in the third quarter. However, Kunzmann completed just
two of 11 passes for eight yards, being intercepted twice.
Dan Ryks
(Fr.,
Renville, Minn./RCW HS) led Hamline receivers with 17 yards on
three catches. Joe Slusarczyk (Jr., St. Paul Park, Minn./Park-CG
HS) led the Piper defense with 8.5 tackles (four solo) and a fumble
recovery. Chad Strehlo (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS)
had 8.0 tackles (three solo), while Andy Brown (Sr., Columbia
Heights, Minn.) had 8.0 tackles (five solo), two forced fumbles
and a fumble recovery. Adam Friedman (Jr., Mankato, Minn./West
HS) had two interceptions and four pass deflections.
Both teams return
to action next Saturday (11/3) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg playing
at Bethel, while Hamline hosts St. Thomas. Football

games are also cybercast on the Internet (through SportsJuice.com)
by going to this link: http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/liveaudio/.
LAST WEEK: Augsburg fell 31-13
at Gustavus Adolphus last Saturday, while Hamline was shut out
50-0
by St. John's at Hamline last Saturday.
SERIES: This is the 62nd meeting
in the all-time series between Augsburg and Hamline, a series
the Pipers lead 39-20-2. The series started in 1926, Augsburg's
first year of football, and the teams have played every year since
1954. Augsburg has won the last five games in a row in the series.
LAST YEAR: T.J. Bramwell scored
two touchdowns and Scott Archambault picked off two passes,
including a key late-game interception, as Augsburg rallied for
a 12-7 victory over Hamline on Oct. 28, 2000 at Hamline's Norton
Stadium. Trailing 7-0 at halftime, Augsburg rallied for two second-half
touchdowns, on a four-yard run by Bramwell midway through the
third quarter and on a two-yard run by Bramwell midway through
the fourth quarter. Augsburg could muster just 206 yards of total
offense (93 rushing, 113 passing), but was able to hold on for
the win. Augsburg's defense held the Pipers to just 46 rushing
yards on 35 carries, while allowing just 172 yards of passing
and forcing three interceptions.
Shane Gunderson
also
had an interception for the Auggies, which led to Augsburg's first
touchdown. His pickoff and 25-yard return at the 8:37 mark of
the third quarter placed the ball on the Hamline 5-yard line,
and three plays later, Bramwell rumbled three yards for the Auggies'
first score. The extra point failed and Augsburg trailed 7-6.
Archambault scored his first pickoff of the afternoon on the next
drive, but an Augsburg field-goal attempt was missed. The Auggies
used a 14-play, 59-yard, six-minute drive to score the go-ahead
touchdown. The drive was keyed by a 15-yard pass from Paul
Tetzloff to Sammy Gross and a 16-yard pass from Tetzloff
to Desman Oakley. Bramwell rushed two yards for his second
touchdown -- his second career rushing score in an Augsburg uniform.
The two-point conversion attempt was intercepted. Hamline could
not convert on its last two drives, and the final drive was capped
by Archambault's second interception of the day with 34 seconds
left, after the Pipers had driven to the Augsburg 31-yard line.
Hamline opened
the scoring early in the second quarter, as Matt Stolski rushed
two yards for a touchdown at the 12:45 mark of the period. Augsburg
had a chance to score twice in the second period, but a field-goal
attempt was blocked by Hamline's Adam Grinsteinner, and
the Auggies could not convert after Matt Chappuis blocked
a punt, which put the ball at the Hamline 15-yard line with 1:50
remaining. The Auggies turned the ball over on downs.
Brian Warden rushed for 50 yards
on 10 carries to lead the Auggies, while Bramwell rushed for 33
yards on nine carries. Tetzloff completed nine passes for 113
yards. Gross had 55 receiving yards on four catches, and Oakley
had two catches for 32 yards. Andy Kunzmann threw for 163
yards for the Pipers, while Joey Kvamme's 33 rushing yards
led the team. Doug Amsden paced the Pipers with 72 receiving
yards on five catches. Brian Fearing led the Piper defense with
seven tackles (six solo) and a sack. Brent Peroutka led
the Auggie defense with nine tackles (six solo) and three pass
break-ups. Chappuis had eight tackles (six solo) and two sacks,
and Andy Howard had seven tackles (four solo) and three
sacks. Gunderson added seven tackles (six solo).
SCOUTING
THE AUGGIES:
It's been an up-and-down season for Augsburg, to say the least.
The Auggies have alternated winning and losing each week, with
impressive wins over Carleton (52-21), St. Olaf (20-0) and Macalester
(50-14) coupled with disappointing losses at Wisconsin-Eau Claire
(37-14), against St. John's (48-14), at St. Thoams (34-14) and
last week's 31-13 loss at Gustavus.
Augsburg enters
the game with the No. 3 defense, statistically, in the MIAC, averaging
just 291.1 yards of total offense per game in league play, including
the No. 3 defense in the conference against both the run (100.8
yards per game) and the pass (190.2 yards per game). On the other
side of the ball, Augsburg's offense is ranked seventh in the
league (334.2 yards per game), sixth in passing (185.3 yards per
game) and fifth in rushing (148.8 yards per game) -- the most
balanced offense, statistically, between the run and pass in the
conference.
On offense,
quarterback Dave Fransen (Jr., Farmington, Minn.), in his
first season as the team's full-time starter, has continued to
develop his game, with the growing pains any newcomer to a position
would have. He is averaging 166.3 yards passing per game, throwing
12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions so far. Meanwhile, the offensive
line has been solid, allowing just 19 sacks. Auggie wide receivers
have caught 13 touchdowns this season -- eight by Mark Johnson
(Sr., Hastings, Minn.). He is averaging 89 receiving yards
per game and enters the contest with 1,852 career receiving yards,
fourth-best in school history (the record, 4,696, was set by Scott
Hvistendahl from 1994-98). He needs 83 yards to move into
third place, pasing Larry Thompson's 1,935 yards (1970-73).
Jeff Kaeppe's 2,273 yards (1991-94) is second on the career
list. He has 102 career receptions in three seasons at Augsburg;
he played his freshman year at South Dakota State.
Ben Paul
(So.,
St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) has made a tremendous impact in a
revamped Auggie backfield, with 418 rushing yards (81 carries)
and six touchdowns. His rushing mate, T.J. Bramwell (Jr.,
Tomah, Wis.) has 321 yards on 87 carries and three rushing TDs
(five overall).
Linebacker Mitch
Theisen (Sr., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo HS) leads the team with
42 tackles (31 solo), while teammate Scott Archambault (Sr.,
Faribault, Minn.) has 32.5 (18 solo). Defensive backs Larry
Lyden (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) and Luke Wittrock
(Sr., Boone, Iowa) have 37 (31 solo) and 33.5 (23 solo) tackles
respectively. The Auggie defensive backfield has picked off 10
passes, already more than last year's season total of eight. With
another pickoff last week, Brent Peroutka (Sr., Faribault,
Minn.) improved his season total to five; the single-season school
record is eight, set by Bill Kriesel in 1993. Peroutka
has 11 career interceptions, the fourth-most in school history.
Jeremy Dalluge's 17 (1992-95) is the school record.
The defensive
line has claimed 18 sacks and 49 tackles for loss this year, led
by Dave Sherry (Sr., Hastings, Minn.), who has 7.5 sacks
and 10.5 tackles for loss. His sack total is 6.5 away from the
single-season school record of 14, set by Bob Anderson in
1995. Matt Chappuis (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) has two sacks
this year, while Kyle Koch (Jr., Austin, Minn.) also has
two. Chappuis is currently third in school history in career sacks
with 22.5; the career record is 28.5, set by Anderson from 1992-95,
with Paul Moore (1994-97) second with 23.5 sacks.
On the injury
front, Adam Leiter (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS),
who has started at linebacker (WLB) this season, will miss Saturday's
game with bruised ribs. Luke Wright (Sr., Faribault, Minn.),
who started the season as a tight end before switching to defense
three games into the season, will get the start. Wright played
wide receiver for one season at Wisconsin-La Crosse and two seasons
at Hamline before transferring to Augsburg.
AUGGIES DROP
31-13 LOSS AT GUSTAVUS: Gustavus
Adolphus jumped out to a 17-0 first quarter lead and went on to
claim a 31-13 win over Augsburg last Saturday at Gustavus' Hollingsworth
Field in St. Peter, Minn. Quarterback Joe Thorvig completed
22-of-37 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Gustie
offense, while the Gustavus defense forced four turnovers and
limited the Auggies to 254 yards of total offense and 13 points.
The Gusties scored on all three of their possessions in the first
quarter on their way to a 17-0 lead. Gustavus opened the scoring
on its first drive when Curt Baldus hit a 35-yard field
goal with 8:30 remaining. Augsburg turned the ball over two plays
later, when Gustavus linebacker Dirk Erickson forced a
fumble that Zach Zimmer recovered at the Augsburg 31-yard
line. Gustavus extended its lead to 10-0 when Thorvig found Brett
Boese in the end zone from 17 yards out, two plays later with
7:48 remaining. With 1:06 remaining in the first quarter, Thorvig
hit Ryan Hoag with a 20-yard touchdown strike and the Gusties
led 17-0.
Late in the
second quarter, Augsburg defensive back Brett Peroutka
(Sr., Faribault, Minn.) intercepted a Thorvig pass and returned
it 21 yards to the Gustavus seven-yard line. The Auggies got on
the board two plays later when quarterback Dave Fransen
(So., Farmington, Minn.) found wide receiver Mark Johnson
(Sr., Hastings, Minn.) in the end zone from seven-yards out. Tim
Mauseth (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) added the
extra point, which cut the Gustavus lead to 17-7. Dave Sherry
(Sr., Hastings, Minn.) blocked a Gustie field-goal attempt
just before halftime.
Gustavus opened
the second half the way it opened the game, with an impressive
nine-play, 56-yard drive that ended with Adam Britz busting
loose on a 21-yard touchdown run on a 4th-and-1 play. Baldus converted
the extra point to make the score 24-7. Augsburg took the ensuing
kickoff and marched 70 yards in nine plays with Jamie Smith
(Jr., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) scoring on a 17-yard pass from
Fransen. The extra point was no good, which cut the Gustavus lead
to 24-13. With the Gustavus offense struggling in the fourth quarter,
Augsburg had multiple opportunities to get back into the game,
however the Auggie offense turned the ball over three times in
the final eight minutes of the game. The final turnover resulted
in a Gustavus touchdown as strong safety Brad Arndt grabbed
a Fransen aerial and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown. Baldus
added the extra point, which made the final score 31-13 in favor
of Gustavus.
Gustavus compiled
324 yards of total offense in the contest, including 111 yards
rushing and 213 passing. Jeff Pelant was the Gusties leading
rusher with 10 carries for 54 yards and Hoag was the Gusties'
leading receiver with six catches for 74 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively, Gustavus was led by linebacker Erickson, who totalled
13 tackles (nine solo) and forced two fumbles. Linebacker Brian
Bergstrom also compiled 13 tackles, while Zimmer contributed
nine tackles and recovered two fumbles.
Augsburg was
led offensively by quarterback Fransen, who completed 22-of-37
passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.
Ben Paul (So., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) was the leading
rusher with 15 carries for 61 yards, while Johnson was the leading
receiver, with nine catches for 77 yards and one touchdown. Defensively,
Augsburg was led by defensive back Larry Lyden (Sr., New
Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) with 12 tackles (eight solo). Defensive
lineman Joe Cullen (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) recorded seven
tackles, including two tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.
AUGGIES HAVE
WON LAST FIVE IN A ROW OVER PIPERS: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg,
in his 11th season as the Auggies' mentor, has the third-longest
current tenure among MIAC coaches, with Bethel coach Steve
Johnson (13 years) and St. John's coach John Gagliardi
(49 years) ahead of him. In his 10 previous seasons, the Auggies
have a 6-4 record against Gustavus, and the Auggies have won the
last five games in a row in the series -- 2000 (12-7 at Hamline),
1999 (15-10 at Hamline), 1998 (24-14 at Augsburg), 1997 (26-7
at Hamline) and 1996 (19-16 at Augsburg). Augsburg also won in
1994 (17-7 at Augsburg). Hamline's last win at Augsburg was a
25-9 triumph on Oct. 3, 1992. Since Osberg was hired, Hamline
has also won in 1991 (33-12 at Augsburg), 1993 (29-9 at Hamline)
and 1995 (35-7 at Hamline).
With a 52-56
career record over 11 seasons, Osberg is closing in on the school's
all-time win record of 56, set by Edor Nelson during a
career that spanned 23 seasons (1947-69). Nelson was 58-118-10
in his Auggie coaching days.
AUGSBURG'S
FINAL "HOME" GAME WILL BE AT METRODOME: Saturday's game with
Hamline will be the final home game for the Auggies at Edor Nelson
Field this season. Augsburg's last "home" game
of the season, against Concordia-Moorhead, will be played at the
Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis on Friday, Nov. 9
at 1 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students, and can
be purchased from Gate F at the Metrodome on the day of the game.
There will be no advance ticket sales. NO AUGSBURG PASSES ARE
ACCEPTED (INCLUDING FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS); ONLY MIAC PASSES
WILL BE HONORED.
The Augsburg-Concordia
game was moved to the Metrodome because of previous schedule commitments
for the air-supported dome structure -- known on campus as "the
Bubble" -- that covers Edor Nelson Field during the winter
months. The Bubble is scheduled to go up after the Auggie men's
soccer game against St. John's, slated for Saturday evening (10/27).
The Bubble will be inflated on Sunday (10/28). The Bubble is used
extensively by groups both on- and off-campus, including indoor
soccer leagues, golf driving range training, etc.
The Auggies
and Cobbers will be the only MIAC teams playing at the Metrodome
this season, because of scheduling conflicts at the Metrodome.
The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) will hold its
five-game Metrodome event on Nov. 9-10, with two games scheduled
after Augsburg's contest with Concordia -- Minnesota State-Moorhead
against Northern State (S.D.) at 5:30 p.m., and Concordia-St.
Paul against Southwest State at 9 p.m. The NSIC will have three
games on Saturday (11/10).

SCOUTING
THE PIPERS:
First-year coach Donovan Larson, a Hamline alumnus (1966)
who spent the previous 14 seasons as an assistant coach at Division
II powerhouse North Dakota State, returned to Hamline to take
the coaching reins after longtime coach Dick Tressel (23
seasons) resigned to join his brother, Ohio State head coach Jim
Tressel, in a football administrative position. It has been
a struggle for the Pipers in the competitive MIAC, as they enter
Saturday's game with a 1-6 overall mark, 1-5 in the MIAC. The
Pipers' lone win came in a 47-21 triumph over winless Carleton
on Oct. 13.
Last week, the
Pipers were shut out for the first time this season, a 50-0 loss
to St. John's at Norton Stadium. The Johnnies outgained the Pipers
by a 556-122 margin, and could muster just 93 rushing yards and
only 29 passing yards -- completing six of 30 passes with three
interceptions, one returned for a touchdown. St. John's held the
ball for 32:25 (86 plays) compared to 27:35 (64 plays) for Hamline.
The Johnnies pulled away with 20 points in each of the second
and third quarters.
Nate Dammann
(So.,
Maynard, Minn./MACCRAY HS) started at quarterback for the Pipers
and completed just five passes for 24 yards. Joey Kvamme (Sr.,
Warren, Minn.) gained 58 yards on 21 carries to lead the Piper
offense, while Jim Miller's (Sr., Annandale, Minn.) 16
receiving yards on two catches led the receivers. Joe Slusarczyk
(Jr., St. Paul Park, Minn./Park HS) led the Piper defense
with 10.5 tackles (10 solo), including two for loss, while Chad
Strehlo (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS) had eight tackles
(all solo). Justin Werner (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) forced
and recovered two fumbles and had an interception.
Though Augsburg
has won the last five games in a row in the series, the Pipers
have played the Auggies tough in recent years; the average margin
of victory in the five consecutive Auggie wins has only been 8.4
points, with three of the games (including the last two) decided
by five points or less.
AUGGIES RETURN
TO THE RADIO: Augsburg
football has returned to the airwaves for the rest of the 2001
football season. Today's game is being broadcast live on WLKX-FM
95.9, "Spirit 95.9" of Forest Lake, Minn., with Auggie
radio veterans Tom Witschen and Russ Bohaty on the
call. All remaining Auggie games will be broadcast live on the
station, which reaches well throughout the northern Twin Cities
area. Witschen and Bohaty also broadcast the North Metro High
School Football Game of the Week on Spirit 95.9 every Friday night.
If you live
in an area where you can't hear the station, you can still listen
to the games on your computer. Set your Internet browser to Augsburg's
official athletic webpage -- www.augsburg.edu/athletics/
-- and click on the "Live Audio" link. Thanks to Augsburg's
arrangement with www.sportsjuice.com,
you will be able to hear selected Auggie sporting events, including
the football season, around the world on the Internet.
NEXT WEEK: Augsburg travels to
MIAC leader Bethel next Saturday (11/3) at 1 p.m. at Armstrong
Stadium in Arden Hills, Minn. Hamline returns home to Norton Stadium
in St. Paul, Minn., next Saturday, hosting St. Thomas at 1 p.m.
