MINNEAPOLIS (9/20/03) -- Yarzue
Slowon (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) caught three second-half
touchdown passes from Tony George (So., Blaine, Minn.), as Augsburg College
rallied for a 31-24 victory over St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference football game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson
Field.
Slowon caught seven passes for
152 yards to lead the Auggies, while George completed 15 of 31 passes for 243
yards, throwing four touchdown passes without an interception.
The victory earned Augsburg
head coach Jack Osberg the school's all-time victory record. Osberg,
a 1962 Augsburg graduate in his 13th season as head coach, now has a 57-67 career
record, passing his former coach, Edor Nelson, who was 56-118-10 from
1947-69.
Augsburg rallied from a 24-13
third-quarter deficit to claim the victory, outgaining the Oles by a 172-147
margin in the second half and scoring 18 unanswered points. Augsburg gained
346 yards of total offense in the game, compared to 360 for St. Olaf.
The Auggies and Oles have played
numerous close games in recent years, as eight of the last 11 games in the all-time
series have been decided by a touchdown or less. Augsburg has won five of the
last seven games in the all-time series, a series the Oles lead 33-13.
The key play in the Auggie second-half
comeback came on a fourth-down-and-9 play from the Augsburg 17-yard line late
in the third quarter, when the Oles were flagged 15 yards for a roughing-the-kicker
penalty, keeping an Augsburg drive alive. Three plays later, George hooked up
with Slowon on a 70-yard touchdown pass, cutting the Ole lead to 24-19.
On St. Olaf's next drive, a
pass from Brian Senske (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) was intercepted by
Jordan Hastings (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who returned
the ball 31 yards to the St. Olaf 28. On Augsburg's first play from scrimmage
on the ensuing drive, George found Slowon for another touchdown pass to give
the Auggies a 25-24 advantage.
Later in the fourth quarter,
a St. Olaf drive stalled, and the Oles elected to go for it on fourth down at
their own 39-yard line. A fourth-down pass went incomplete, giving the Auggies
the ball again with a short field and 9:11 to play. Six plays later, the Auggie
combination struck again, as George hooked up with Slowon for a 10-yard scoring
pass to produce the final margin of victory.
George has now thrown seven
touchdown passes on the year, five to Slowon.
Augsburg opened the game with
a touchdown on its first drive, as George connected with Jamie Smith (Sr.,
Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) for a 15-yard pass, completing a nine-play, 73-yard
drive. The Auggies took a 13-0 lead early in the second quarter, when George
capped an 11-play, 68-yard drive with a one-yard plunge.
But St. Olaf scored 24 straight
points to take the momentum of the game, as well as the lead. Aaron Stinar
(Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS) scored on a one-yard run, to cap a six-play,
74-yard drive aided by a 47-yard flanker option pass from Nate Lund (Sr.,
Mankato, Minn./Loyola HS) to Nick Rost (Fr., Faribault, Minn.).
Lund then got into the scoring
action, as he caught a 12-yard touchdown pas from Senske on the Oles' next drive,
and just before halftime, kicker Dan O'Malley (Fr., St. Anthony, Minn.)
booted a 32-yard field goal, to give the Oles an 18-13 halftime advantage.
St. Olaf scored on its third
drive of the third quarter, taking advantage of positive field position on a
poor Auggie punt. The Oles had to ddrive just 33 yards in six plays, capping
it on Stinar's second touchdown of the day, a nine-yard rush up the middle to
give the Oles their final lead of the game at 24-13 with 4:36 left in the period.
St. Olaf's Senske threw for
107 yards, completing 15-of-25 passes. Bobby Andrade (Fr., Bell Gardens,
Calif.) led the Ole rushers with 87 yards on 23 carries, while Stinar had 64
yards on 15 carries. In all, St. Olaf rushed for 187 yards compared to Augsburg's
103. Lund caught four passes for 59 yards.
Ben Paul (Sr., St. Paul,
Minn./Johnson HS) rushed eight times for 45 yards, while Nick Sanchez (Sr.,
Almond, Wis./Almond-Bancroft HS) had 31 yards on eight carries.
Smith caught three passes for
27 yards, and Shawn Johnson (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) caught two passes
for 40 yards.
Defensively, Augsburg was led
by Brandon Fox (Sr., Springfield, Minn.), who had 13 tackles (six solo),
including two for loss. Jim Gunderson (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) had 12 tackles
(six solo), Major Williams (Jr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington HS) had
11 tackles (four solo) and Ross Peroutka (So., Faribault, Minn.) had
10 tackles (five solo). Joe Cullen (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) claimed
two sacks and four tackles for loss among his nine tackles (three solo) on the
day.
Matt Bucka (Jr., New
Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) led the Oles with 11 tackles (eight solo),
including two for loss. Andre Conner (So., Pensacola, Fla.) had eight
tackles (one solo) and a half-sack, while John Davis (So., Edina, Minn.)
had seven tackles (four solo) and a sack.
The two teams return to MIAC
play next Saturday (9/27) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Gustavus and St.
Olaf hosting St. John's.

website (http://www.minnesotasportsupdate.com/)
with Lou Michaels and Alan Armstrong.
SERIES: This is the 46th game in the all-time
series between Augsburg and St. Olaf, a series the Oles lead 33-12. St. Olaf
was the opponent for Augsburg's first-ever football game in 1926, a game the
Oles won 26-0. Augsburg and St. Olaf played each season from 1926 to 1934, in
1941 and 1942 and from 1946 to 1950, and every year since St. Olaf rejoined
the MIAC in 1974. Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg is 7-5 against St.
Olaf, and Augsburg has won four of the last six games in the series.
LAST WEEK: Augsburg suffered
its first loss of the year last Saturday with a
52-20 nonconference decision at Wisconsin-Eau Claire. St. Olaf opened MIAC
play with a
40-16 home win over crosstown rival Carleton.
LAST YEAR: Brian
Senske threw for 271 yards and the eventual deciding touchdown late in the
game, giving St. Olaf a 23-21 win over visiting Augsburg on Sept. 21, 2002 at
Manitou Field in the newly-dedicated Ade Christensen Athletic Complex. St. Olaf
held off an Augsburg club that rallied from a 10-0 deficit to take a 14-10 lead
going into the fourth quarter.
Augsburg outgained St. Olaf
by a 468-429 margin in the game. The Oles won despite a single-game record effort
by Augsburg quarterback Dave Fransen, who became the first Auggie ever
to throw for more than 400 yards in a single game. He set two single-game school
records, completing 34 of 53 passes for 405 yards and two touchdowns. His 405
yards broke the old single-game record of 398, set by Derrin Lamker in
a 1997 game against Concordia-Moorhead. Fransen's 34 completions broke Lamker's
school record of 31, set in a 1997 game against Hamline.
Trailing 14-10, St. Olaf scored
twice and dominated the fourth quarter, holding the ball for nine minutes, 15
seconds compared to 5:45 for Augsburg. An eight-play, 71-yard drive was capped
by a one-yard scoring rush by Cordell Hunkins to give the Oles the lead
to stay at 17-14. Augsburg got the ball and advanced it to the St. Olaf 31-yard
line, but Matt Dean intercepted a pass with 11:16 left in the fourth
quarter. Starting at their own 5-yard line after a penalty on the interception,
St. Olaf marched the ball 95 yards on 16 plays, consuming 5:35 off the clock
before Senske threw a 23-yard touchdown strike to Kyle Fritze to give
the Oles a 23-14 lead, after the kick conversion attempt failed.
Fransen was intercepted again
on Augsburg's subsequent drive, by David Chapman, but the Auggies got
the ball back three plays later, when Andy Matzke picked off a Senske
pass and gave the Auggies the ball at their own 24-yard line with 4:12 remaining.
Augsburg moved the ball quickly with a 10-play, 76-yard drive, scoring on a
Fransen 10-yard pass to T.J. Bramwell with 1:36 left. Though the subsequent
onside kick attempt failed, Augsburg did get the ball back after St. Olaf was
forced to punt with six seconds left. A desperation pass and lateral attempt
in the closing seconds ended at the St. Olaf 45-yard line, and the Oles claimed
the victory.
Augsburg was competitive with
St. Olaf throughout the game, but penalties hurt the Auggies early. Augsburg
was whistled for nine penalties for 89 yards, as three key penalties killed
Auggie drives in the first quarter. Meanwhile, a bit of St. Olaf trickery gave
the Oles the first TD, as receiver Nate Lund threw a 63-yard end-around
option pass for a touchdown to Cory Paterson. A 38-yard field goal by
Sean Koomen gave the Oles a 10-0 halftime advantage. Augsburg rallied in
the third quarter, scoring twice. Mathew Shannon scored his fourth touchdown
of the season on a 23-yard pass reception from Fransen at the 11:01 mark of
the third quarter, and three drives later, Ben Paul scored on a five-yard
run to give the Auggies their only lead of the game with 56 seconds left in
the period.
Shannon had his second straight
100-yard receiving performance, catching seven balls for 107 yards. Sammy
Gross also had a career-best afternoon, catching eight balls for 110 yards,
and Luke Wright caught 11 passes for 86 yards. Bramwell had a 111-yard
afternoon, catching six balls for 99 yards and rushing eight times for 12 yards.
Paul rushed 14 times for 52 yards. Hunkins
rushed for 81 yards on 24 carries to lead St. Olaf, while Paterson caught six
passes for 110 yards. Lund caught four passes for 57 yards.
OSBERG HAS TIED SCHOOL'S
ALL-TIME FOOTBALL VICTORY RECORD: Augsburg
head coach Jack Osberg has been the architect of a rebirth of Augsburg
College football since he was named head coach in 1991. Osberg enters his 13th
season with the Auggies with a 56-67 career record, now tied with legendary
head coach Edor Nelson for the most wins in school history. Nelson went
56-118-10 from 1947-69. He has the most MIAC wins (44-62-0) of any Augsburg
coach, and his career overall winning percentage of .455 is second-best in school
history. Bill Caris (1972-75) was 19-19, for the school's best winning
percentage of .500. Osberg has the third-longest tenure among current MIAC football
coaches, behind St. John's John Gagliardi (55th season, 51st at St. John's
in 2003) and Bethel's Steve Johnson (15th season).
SCHLIEMAN, SLOWON, PIKE AMONG
NATION'S LEADERS: Augsburg
kicker/punter Nick Schlieman (So., Burnsville, Minn.), wide receiver
Yarzue Slowon (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and defensive
lineman Craig Pike (Jr., Pine Island, Minn.) are all among the nation's
leaders in several categories in NCAA Division III football, according to statistics
released after the second week of games.
Schlieman currently leads the
nation in punting average, with an amazing 51.7-yard average. He is the lone
Division III punter to average more than 50 yards per punt; he has nine punts
for a total of 465 yards.
In the season-opener against
Jamestown (N.D.), Schlieman had eight punts for 419 yards (52.4-yard average),
including a school-record 74-yard punt on Augsburg's first drive. He also had
punts of 68, 59 and 52 yards in the game to earn both MIAC and Division III
National (Don Hansen's Football Gazette) Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Last week against Wisconsin-Eau
Claire, Schlieman had one punt for 46 yards before leaving the game in the first
quarter, after being shaken up on a tackle on a kick return. He is expected
to return to the Auggie lineup this week.
Slowon is 18th among Division
III wide receivers in receptions per game, with an 8.0 receptions-per-game average.
He has 16 receptions in two games this year for 194 yards and two touchdowns.
Slowon earned MIAC Offensive
Player of the Week honors in the 20-19 win over Jamestown, as he caught 13 passes
for 145 yards and two touchdowns, both coming in the final 61 seconds of play
as the Auggies rallied from a 19-6 deficit. His 13 catches are the most in a
single game in Division III football this season, tied with David Krueger
of Macalester, who caught 13 passes last week against Lewis and Clark (Ore.).
Pike, a defensive lineman who
transferred to Augsburg from Division II St. Cloud State after three seasons
away from college football, is tied for eighth nationally in fumbles forced
per game, with a 1.0-per-game average. He has two forced fumbles in two games.
St. Olaf has one player in the
national rankings, freshman Bobby Andrade (Fr., Belle Gardens, Calif.),
who is 29th in kickoff returns, with a 27.3-yard average (four returns for 109
yards).
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES:
After a dramatic 20-19, come-from-behind victory over Jamestown (N.D.) in the
season-opener, the Augsburg football team suffered its first defeat of the season
with a 52-20 loss at Wisconsin-Eau Claire last Saturday night. The
Blugolds jumped out to a 31-0 lead in a quarter-and-a-half, and though Augsburg
ran off 20 unanswered points in the second and third quarters, the outcome was
never in doubt.
Big plays were the order of
the day, as five of UWEC's touchdowns were 25 yards or more, and three touchdowns
were just one-play drives -- a 37-yard pass from Jeremy Darnell to Erik
Ferguson in the second quarter, a 35-yard pass from Nels Fredrickson
to Ferguson in the third quarter, and a 71-yard interception return by Derek
Sikora in the fourth quarter.
Returns also played a big role
in the outcome of the game. Thanks to 118 return yards on four kickoff returns
(a 29.5-yard average) and 41 yards on five punt returns, the Blugolds benefitted
from excellent field position. The Blugolds average starting point on drives
in the first half was their own 40-yard line, and the Blugolds averaged a drive
starting at midfield in the third quarter.
Augsburg's scores came on three
straight drives that sandwiched halftime. Augsburg finally got on the board
with 5:37 remaining in the second quarter, taking advantage of an Eau Claire
holding penalty and running it into the end zone. Ben Paul (Sr., St.
Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) ran the ball in from one yard out, completing a 10-play,
80-yard drive that took 5:42 to complete. On their next possession, Augsburg
scored on a 25-yard pass from Tony George (So., Blaine, Minn.) to Shawn
Johnson (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) to gain the momentum heading into halftime.
The two-point conversion was good, on a pass from George to Joe Starks
(Jr., Roseville, Minn./Totino-Grace HS), and at the half the score was 31-14
Eau Claire.
The Auggies made it a game on
the first possession of the second half as they scored a touchdown on their
third straight possession to make the score 31-20. Nick Sanchez (Sr.,
Almond, Wis./Almond-Bancroft HS) completed a 16-play, 79-yard drive with a three-yard
run for his first collegiate touchdown. The drive, which took over half the
third quarter (7:47) to complete, featured 13 rushes. But after the teams exchanged
punts, and Sikora motored 33 yards on a punt return to set up the Fredrickson-to-Ferguson
35-yard scoring strike, the nail was put in the Auggie coffin.
Augsburg was paced by George,
who threw for 200 yards on 22 completions in 43 attempts. Freshman tight end
Andrew Neumann (Fr., Somerset, Wis.) caught eight passes for 88 yards,
while Johnson caught four balls for 59 yards. Augsburg accumulated 136 rushing
yards from eight ball carriers, led by Paul's 39 yards on 10 carries.
Jordan Hastings (So.,
Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) led the Auggie defense with 11 tackles
(six solo). John Golnitz (Jr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) had eight tackles
(five solo), including two for loss, and Joe Cullen (Jr., Coon Rapids,
Minn.) had a sack. Golnitz also filled in admirably for Schlieman as the Auggies'
punter, with five punts for a 30.8-yard average.
SCOUTING THE OLES:
After opening the season with a 23-10 loss at Luther (Iowa) in the first week
of the season, St. Olaf responded with a 40-16 win over crosstown rival Carleton
College in its MIAC opener last Saturday at St. Olaf. The game for the
traditional "Goat Trophy" between the two Northfield schools received a boost
with a sponsorship by hometown company Malt-O-Meal, with the game renamed the
"Cereal Bowl" game.
St. Olaf
amassed 491 yards of total offense, led by 200 all-purpose yards by Bobby
Andrade (Fr., Bell Gardens, Calif.). Andrade had 116 rushing yards on 25
carries, while catching two passes for 25 yards and a touchdown, and returning
two kicks for 59 yards.
The Oles
jumped to a 20-0 first quarter lead on the heels of two Brian Senske
(Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) touchdown passes. Senske finished 20-of-29 for 187
yards. Also helping the Ole offense was Aaron Stinar (Sr., Blaine, Minn.)
who had 13 carries for 55 yards and three touchdowns. Ole Marc Olson
(Fr., Prior Lake, Minn.) rushed eight times for 45 yards.
The Ole defense held the visiting Knights to 347 total yards, with only 117
coming through the air. Matt Willis (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa) had 10
tackles (six solo) in the win.
Nate Lund (Sr., Mankato, Minn.) led the Oles with 78 yards of total
offense, carrying for 10 yards and catching a team-high six passes for 68 yards
and one touchdown. Also scoring for the Oles was Dennis Wambach (Sr.,
Lake Oswego, Ore.), who caught a four-yard pass from Senske late in the first
quarter.
AUGSBURG AT HOME, ON THE
RUG: At Edor Nelson Field, affectionately known as "The Cage" by Auggies,
Augsburg has put together at 30-26 record in head coach Jack Osberg's tenure
(since 1991). Since the field opened in 1984, Augsburg is 33-53-1 at home. On
artificial-turf fields (including games at Edor Nelson Field, the Hubert H.
Humphrey Metrodome and Fargo, N.D., Fargodome), Augsburg is 37-32 since 1991
and 40-63-1 since 1984.
NEXT WEEK: Augsburg returns to MIAC play on the
road next Saturday (9/27) at 1 p.m., with a game against Gustavus Adolphus College
at Hollingsworth Field in St. Peter, Minn. St. Olaf hosts MIAC powerhouse St.
John's next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Manitou Field in Northfield, Minn.
