MINNEAPOLIS
(11/6/03) -- Putting together 497 yards of total offense,
Augsburg College finished with a .500 record for the first time
since the 1999 season with a 23-6 triumph over Hamline University
in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game
Thursday night at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
Tony
George (So., Blaine, Minn.) threw for 290 yards and Jamie
Smith (Sr., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) caught nine passes
for 145 yards to lead the Auggies, who finished the season 5-5
overall, 4-4 in MIAC play.
Hamline finished
the season 2-8 overall, 0-8 in the MIAC.
Despite turning
the ball over four times -- three fumbles and an interception --
Augsburg dominated the game. Augsburg did not allow a Hamline
first down in the first half and claimed 30 first downs to
Hamline's four in the contest. Hamline mustered just 144 yards of
total offense, including only 15 net rushing yards, the lowest
total allowed by the Auggies this season.
Hamline actually
scored first, taking advantage of Augsburg's first turnover.
Piper linebacker Tyler Schultz (So., Lewiston,
Minn./Lewiston-Altura HS) took a fumble and ran 66 yards for a
touchdown six minutes into the game.
Hamline
recovered a surprise onside kick but could not take advantage, as
a punt was shaked for a one-yard net, giving the Auggies the ball
at their own 46-yard-line. Augsburg used the ensuing 11-play,
4:24 drive to score on Ben Paul's (Sr., St.
Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) one-yard plunge.
George threw two
touchdown passes in the game, a 17-yarder to Yarzue
Slowon (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) in
the second quarter and an eight-yarder to Andrew Neumann (Fr.,
Somerset, Wis.) in the third quarter. Nick Schlieman (So.,
Burnsville, Minn.) capped the scoring with a 23-yard field goal
midway through the fourth quarter.
Augsburg's
defense stood firm throughout the game, allowing Hamline into
Augsburg territory only twice in the contest. Hamline's longest
drive was its last of the game, as the Pipers drove 76 yards in
seven plays, only to have the drive stalled on downs at the
Augsburg 4-yard-line with 1:51 left.
Steve
Houser (So., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS), one of six
running backs used by the Auggies in the game, rushed for 99
yards on 17 carries. Paul had 35 rushing yards on six carries and
Brady Seesz (Fr., Northfield, MInn.) rushed
eight times for 53 yards.
Neumann caught
eight passes for 69 yards and Slowon caught five passes for 59
yards.
Hamline was led
by quarterback Andy Gagnon (Jr., Waverly,
Minn.), who completed 13-of-18 passes for 129 yards, including a
64-yarder to Ross Roberg (So., Mahtomedi, Minn.)
on the final Piper drive. Roberg caught three passes for 71
yards.
Brandon
Fox (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) had two sacks for Augsburg
and four tackles for loss, as part of a 15-tackle (seven solo)
performance. Joe Cullen (Jr., Coon Rapids,
Minn.) had 10 tackles (four solo), including three for loss and a
sack.
Hamline's
defense was led by Schultz, who had 15 tackles (six solo). Matt
Ruhland (Sr., Eden Valley, Minn.) had 14 tackles (five
solo) and Josh Davidson (So., Stacy, Minn.) had
12 tackles (five solo). Kasey Yoder (So.,
Duluth, Minn.) had eight tackles, 1.5 sacks and three tackles for
loss.

LAST YEAR: Hamline
stopped Augsburg College running backs short on four downs from
the one-yard line in the closing minute, as the Pipers held on
for a 21-13 win over the Auggies on Nov. 7, 2002 at the
Metrodome. The Auggies drove the ball 83 yards in 2:54, but could
not punch the ball into the end zone for the potential
game-winning score. Ralph Rosario and Andy Kunzmann made
two tackles in the four plays, and Rosario and Andy Seliga stopped
Augsburg running back Pat Lofboom short of the goal line
on a fourth-down play with 13 seconds left in regulation.
Trailing 21-7,
Augsburg scored on Steve Housers one-yard touchdown
run with 7:39 left, but the Auggies failed in a pass attempt for
the two-point conversion. Augsburg got the ball back with 3:07
remaining on its own 15-yard line, but long incompletions and a
penalty forced a third-and-19 with 2:01 left at the Augsburg 35.
Augsburg converted with a 20-yard pass to Tony Warren, putting
the ball at the Hamline 45. Augsburg drove the ball to the Piper
25, taking a time out with 1:13 remaining. A 23-yard pass from Dave
Fransen to Luke Wright put the ball at the Hamline 2
with 1:04 left. Lofboom got the ball to the 1 on a plunge, but
three successive runs from the 1 failed to put the ball into the
end zone.
Augsburg
outgained Hamline by a 307-237 margin, but were hampered by two
interceptions and a lost fumble, and by nine penalties for 64
yards. Fransen completed 23-of-32 passes for 247 yards for the
Auggies, with Yarzue Slowon catching eight passes for 92
yards and Wright catching six passes for 74 yards. Meanwhile,
Hamline quarterback Andy Gagnon completed 11-for-16 passes
for 120 yards, and Andy Gross gained 101 rushing yards on
28 carries, scoring once.
Both teams
scored on their first drives to open the game. T.J. Bramwell
broke up the middle on a 23-yard scoring run with 10:36 left in
the first quarter, completing a 10-play, 61-yard drive, consuming
the first 4:24 of the first quarter. Bramwell led the Auggies
with 65 rushing yards on 20 carries. Hamline scored on its first
drive as well, consuming 10 plays and 61 yards. The 4:57 drive
featured several big plays. A third-down pass from Gagnon to
Gross for 18 yards gave the Pipers the ball at the Augsburg 32.
The Pipers converted a fourth-down play with a pass from Gagnon
to Dan Ryks put the ball on the Auggie 14. Gagnon
scrambled away from a potential sack for a nine-yard touchdown to
tie the score with 5:34 left.
After the first
two drives resulted in scores, neither team threatened for the
remainder of the half. In fact, Augsburg managed just 59 yards of
total offense the rest of the first half, while Hamline managed
just 23 yards. The first drive proved successful in the second
half for Hamline, as Gagnon connected with Adam Friedman
on a 28-yard pass to the corner of the end zone with 7:44 left in
the third quarter, completing a 13-play, 59-yard, 7:16 drive.
Augsburg fumbled the ensuing kickoff, giving Hamline the ball at
the Augsburg 30. Gagnon used a quarterback keeper to gain a first
down on a fourth-and-two play to keep the Piper drive alive. The
Pipers turned the turnover into points, as Gross drove for a
two-yard score with 3:08 left in the third to take a 21-7 lead.
Mitch Theisen
led the Auggie defense with 16 tackles (two solo), while Brandon
Fox had 15 tackles (four solo). Kyle Koch had 10
tackles (seven solo), including two sacks. Derek Kuhlman had
six tackles and 1.5 sacks. Hamline was led by Seliga, who had 13
tackles, and Matt Ruhland, who had 10 tackles (one solo). Seth
Aho had eight tackles (four solo).
OSBERG NOW
AUGSBURG'S ALL-TIME FOOTBALL VICTORY LEADER: Augsburg head
coach Jack Osberg has been the architect of a rebirth of
Augsburg College football since he was named head coach in 1991.
Now, Osberg can add the mantle of the winningest coach in school
history to his resume. With Augsburg's 31-24 win over St. Olaf on
Sept. 20, Osberg passed his former coach, Edor Nelson, to
claim his 57th career win, one more than Nelson on the all-time
football win list. Osberg, a 1962 Augsburg graduate, is in his
13th season with the Auggies and now has a 59-71 career record.
Nelson went 56-118-10 from 1947-69. Osberg also has the most MIAC
wins (47-66-0) of any Augsburg coach, and his career overall
winning percentage of .454 is second-best in school history. Bill
Caris (1972-75) was 19-19, for the school's best winning
percentage of .500. Osberg has the third-longest tenure among
current MIAC football coaches, behind St. John's John
Gagliardi (55th season, 51st at St. John's in 2003) and
Bethel's Steve Johnson (15th season).
AUGSBURG HAS
CHANCE FOR FIRST .500 FINISH SINCE 1999: Augsburg has a
chance to finish at .500 (5-5) for the first time since 1999
(6-4) with a win over Hamline. Under head coach Jack Osberg,
now Augsburg's all-time win leader (59-71) in his 13th season at
Augsburg, Augsburg has six .500-or-above seasons -- second to Edor
Nelson's eight .500-or-above seasons in 23 years of coaching
(1947-69).
FINAL GAME OF
SEASON AT METRODOME: Augsburg will finish the season with an
appearance at the Metrodome for the 13th straight season, when
the Auggies host Hamline on Thursday (11/6) at 7 p.m. There is no
MIAC Metrodome Showcase this season. The Augsburg-Hamline game is
being moved to the Metrodome because the air-supported dome over
Augsburg's home field, Edor Nelson Field, was installed for the
winter months last Saturday.
Augsburg is
making its 17th appearance at the Metrodome this season, the most
of any MIAC school. The Auggies have a 6-10 record in its
previous 16 Metrodome games and a 7-10 record all-time in games
played indoors. Twenty years ago, Augsburg and Bemidji State
played the first non-University of Minnesota college football
game ever at the Metrodome, as the Beavers beat the Auggies 23-7
on Nov. 20, 1983.
As the MIAC team
that has played the most on artificial-turf fields (including
home games at Edor Nelson Field), Augsburg is 40-33 since 1991
and 43-64-1 since 1984 (the year artificial turf was first
installed at what is now Edor Nelson Field, formerly
Anderson-Nelson Field).

BRANDON FOX
NAMED MIAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Augsburg linebacker Brandon
Fox (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) earned MIAC Defensive Player of
the Week honors with his 14-tackle (four solo) effort in
Augsburg's 17-14 win over St. Thomas on Oct. 25. Fox added four
tackles for loss, a pass breakup and fumble recovery to lead the
Auggie defense in one of its best performances in recent years.
Fox, a three-year starter for the Auggies, leads the team with 88
tackles (38 solo), including 16 tackles for loss.
Fox is the third
Auggie to earn MIAC Player of the Week honors this season. Wide
receiver Yarzue Slowon (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale
Armstrong HS) and punter Nick Schlieman (So., Burnsville,
Minn.) earned conference honors for offense and special teams
after the Auggies' season-opening, 20-19 win at Jamestown (N.D.).
INJURY BUG
BITING THE AUGGIES -- Augsburg has had the injury bug bite
over the past several weeks with an already-thin roster. Starting
quarterback Tony George (So., Blaine, Minn.), who suffered
sprained ankle injuries in consecutive games -- a loss at
Gustavus on Sept. 27 and a win over Carleton on Sept. 27. He did
not start against Concordia-Moorhead, with Troy Deden
(Fr., Northfield, Minn.) taking his first collegiate start at
quarterback. George returned to the lineup in the loss to St.
John's, and has started each game since then.
Wide receiver Shawn
Johnson (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) was lost for the season with
a broken collarbone in the Gustavus game. Lost for the season
against Carleton was linebacker Kyle Voelz (Jr., Morgan,
Minn./Cedar Mountain HS), who suffered a torn anterior cruciate
ligament (ACL). Running back Pat Lofboom (Jr., Stillwater,
Minn./Mahtomedi HS) was also lost for the season with an injury
earlier this year. Defensive lineman Chike Ochiagha (Jr.,
Savage, Minn./Holy Angels HS) has also been scratched for the
season due to an ankle injury.
SCHLIEMAN
AMONG NATION'S TOP PUNTERS: Augsburg kicker/punter Nick
Schlieman (So., Burnsville, Minn.) is among the nation's
leaders in punting in NCAA Division III football. Schlieman
ranks seventh nationally in punting, with a 41.9-yard average. In
the season-opener against Jamestown (N.D.), Schlieman had eight
punts for 419 yards (52.4-yard average), including a
school-record 74-yard punt on Augsburg's first drive. He also had
punts of 68, 59 and 52 yards in the game to earn both MIAC and
Division III National (Don Hansen's Football Gazette) Special
Teams Player of the Week honors.
Schlieman
continues to lead the MIAC in punting, averaging 41.9 yards per
punt overall and 39.9 yards per punt in conference games. So far
this season, Schlieman has 55 punts. Of those, 32 are 40 yards or
longer, 13 are 50 yards or longer and five are 60 yards or
longer, including the school-record 74-yarder in the
season-opener against Jamestown (N.D.) and punts of 68, 61, 65
and 66 yards. Schlieman has placed 17 punts inside the opponent
20-yard line this season, against eight touchbacks and only two
fair catches.
For Hamline,
linebacker Matt Ruland is ranked 10th nationally in forced
fumbles, with an average of 0.44 per game (four forced in nine
games).
DOUBLE-DUTY
AUGGIES: Augsburg has several players who will be pulling
double duty starting this month, as practices have begun for
winter sports. The highest-profile double-duty Auggie is wide
receiver Yarzue Slowon (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale
Armstrong HS), who is a rare all-conference player in two team
sports -- an All-MIAC second-team selection in football and an
All-MIAC first-team selection as a men's basketball point guard
last year.
Two football
players will join the Auggies' eight-time national-champion
wrestling team as upper-weight wrestlers -- defensive lineman Joe
Cullen (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and tight end Andrew
Neumann (Fr., Somerset, Wis.), who was a two-time state
champion in high school. Running back Brady Seesz (Fr.,
Northfield, Minn.) will join Augsburg's men's hockey team in the
winter.
Linebacker Jon
Kozitza (Sr., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS), wide
receiver Kurt Dybdahl (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Edison HS)
and defensive lineman Tom Stefanacci (Sr., St. Louis Park,
Minn.) were on Augsburg's baseball team last season, and
quarterback Troy Deden (Fr., Northfield, Minn.), who
played baseball last year at St. Mary's before transferring to
Augsburg, will join the Auggies as a catcher this season.
Offensive lineman Jon Dahlin (Sr., St. Louis Park, Minn.)
is a weight thrower for Augsburg's track and field team.
SCOUTING THE
AUGGIES: Bethel claimed a 44-10 win over Augsburg last
Saturday at Royal Stadium in Arden Hills, Minn. Augsburg was held
to a season-low 197 yards of total offense in the loss. The
Royals' defense held Augsburg to a season-low 127 yards passing
and 70 yards rushing, the second-lowest total for the Auggies
this season. Meanwhile, Bethel racked up 488 yards of total
offense, the
second-highest total Augsburg has given up this year.
Bethel opened
the scoring with an 11-yard scoring pass from senior quarterback Scott
Kirchoff to sophomore Brett Einerson. It was
Einerson's first career touchdown. Augsburg got on the board at
the top of the second quarter on a 35-yard field goal by Nick
Schlieman (So., Burnsville, Minn.), which culminated a
12-play, 38-yard drive. The Royals scored the next two touchdowns
on scoring runs by freshman Ross Muellenberg (35 yards)
and Kirchoff (two yards) to take a 23-3 lead. Augsburg added a
30-yard scoring pass from Tony George (So., Blaine, Minn.)
to Yarzue Slowon (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale
Armstrong HS) with 27 seconds left in the second quarter to close
the gap to 23-10 going into halftime.
The second half
proved to be all Bethel, as Kirchoff threw two scoring passes, 32
yards to junior Jason Weimer and two yards to junior Zach
Ludvigson. Senior receiver John Kilde finished the
scoring, as he caught a 25-yard scoring pass from A.J. Parnell
with 4:55 left to give Bethel their 44-10 win.
The Bethel
defense held Augsburg to a total of 197 yards. Augsburg running
back Steve Houser (So., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS)
carried 26 times for 95 yards to lead Augsburg. Quarterback
George completed 11 of 24 passes for 111 yards and one score.
Slowon caught three passes for 61 yards. Brandon Fox (Sr.,
Springfield, Minn.) had 11 tackles (nine solo) to lead Augsburg,
while Craig Pike (Jr., Pine Island, Minn.) and Taylor
Kroger (So., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) had six tackles
apiece.
SCOUTING THE
PIPERS: Senior running back Erik Fisher rushed for 192
yards on 31 carries to lead Carleton to its first MIAC win in 31
attempts as the Knights defeated Hamline 31-7 Saturday night at
Griffin Stadium in St. Paul.
Coming into the
game with a 30-game MIAC losing streak and 33 games overall,
Carleton (1-7, 1-7 in the MIAC) took the opening kickoff and went
58 yards in 14 plays. Fisher rushed the ball nine times on the
drive including a 1-yard scoring plunge at the 9:09 mark of the
first quarter. After Hamline (2-7, 0-7) was forced to punt, the
Knights struck again on Darren Casper's 7-yard scoring
scramble. The touchdown was set up by a 50-yard Fisher run to the
Hamline 3-yard line.
Carleton added a
field goal in the second quarter to take a 17-0 lead at the
break. They added a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to
put the game away. Knight wide receiver Ben Cooprider
caught a 60-yard touchdown from Caspers with 6:02 left in the
quarter. He also scored on a 1-yard reverse with seven seconds
remaining. The Pipers would score their lone touchdown with 5:16
left in the contest on a Ross Roberg 4-yard touchdown
grab.
Hamline was
outgained in the contest 338-192. Hamline running back Ben
Dahmes rushed for 100 yards on 26 carries. It was his fourth
time this season of reaching the century mark. Quarterback Andy
Gagnon threw for 98 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions
on 18 of 31 passing. Roberg caught seven passes for 37 yards.
The Knights
rushed for 241 yards, behind Fisher's 192. Caspers passed for 97
