November 7, 1998: Bethel 35, Augsburg 28 -- Hvistendahl sets NCAA III record!
MINNEAPOLIS Augsburg College's Scott Hvistendahl (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS) broke the NCAA Division III career receiving yardage record with a 14-reception, 246-yard, one touchdown receiving performance in Augsburg's 35-28 home loss to Bethel College Saturday afternoon at Anderson-Nelson Field. Hvistendahl's performance Saturday puts him at 4,466 career yards on 267 receptions, breaking the NCAA Division III career yardage record previously held by Kurt Barth of Eureka (Ill., 4,311 yards on 256 receptions from 1994-97). The yardage mark puts Hvistendahl in fourth place in the NCAA all-divisions career yardage record list, just 227 yards away from Jerry Rice's all-divisions yardage record of 4,693 yards on 301 receptions (also an NCAA record), set at Mississippi Valley State from 1981-84. Hvistendahl, already the holder of every Augsburg single-season and career receiving record, also broke his records for single-season receptions and receiving yards in Saturday's game. He now has 94 receptions for 1,630 yards. On Saturday, Hvistendahl also broke his Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference records for single-season receiving yards (1,359) and receptions (86) in MIAC games. He already holds the MIAC's career yardage (4,038) and reception (233) records after 35 MIAC career games. Hvistendahl's touchdown on Saturday, a 56-yard reception from quarterback Paul Tetzloff (So., Faribault, Minn.) with 5:30 remaining in the game, cut the Bethel lead to 28-21, as Augsburg rallied from a 21-7 first-quarter deficit. But it wasn't enough, as the team's traded touchdowns in the final two minutes to produce the final margin. Bethel is now 7-2 overall and 6-2 in the MIAC, while Augsburg falls to 5-4 overall and 4-4 in the MIAC. Bethel closes its season with a Metrodome game against Carleton on Friday at 8 p.m., while the Auggies close out the season facing Concordia-Moorhead Friday at 2 p.m. in the Metrodome. The two games will sandwich the conference championship-deciding game between St. John's and Gustavus at 5 p.m. Friday. Bethel's Ryan Rusich (So., Johnston, Iowa), who led all rushers with 77 yards on 12 carries, scored two second-quarter touchdowns as the Royals scored the first 21 points of the game. Quarterback Joe Persuitti (So., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) connected with Jeremy Belisle (Jr., Elk River, Minn./Big Lake HS) on two touchdown passes. Running back Dave Hendel (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial HS) capped the Bethel scoring with a16-yard run. Persuitti threw for 242 yards, completing 24 of 44 passes. Belisle caught eight of Persuitti's passes for 107 yards. Josh Savageau (So., Blaine, Minn.) had 58 rushing yards. Augsburg's rally began on a 24-yard scoring pass from Tetzloff to Damien Rochon-Washington (So., Chicago, Ill./Kenwood Academy) late in the first half. Passing touchdowns followed to Tim Hamer (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) and Hvistendahl, and finished with a Hail-Mary tipped touchdown to Tim Peper (So., Maplewood, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS). Hamer had 60 yards on seven receptions. Tetzloff completed 24 of 47 passes for 365 yards, with one interception and four touchdowns. Three Auggie defenders had more than 10 tackles - Jake Kern

Justin Hipple (So., Silver Bay, Minn.) with 11 tackles
(five solo) and Steve Sathre (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo
HS) with 10 tackles (four solo). Kirk Midthun (Jr., Dodge
Center, Minn./Triton HS) led the Royals with eight tackles (six
solo) and one interception.
