For the first time in 17 years, the Augsburg football team defeated NCAA Division III power St. John's. Augsburg's 20-10 victory at Anderson-Nelson Field raised its overall record to 2-1 and evened its MIAC record at 1-1. The Auggies never trailed in the game and held the big-play St. John's offense to only 317 yards and one touchdown in addition to forcing seven turners.

Senior quarterback Derrin Lamker opened the Auggie scoring with a one-yard touchdwn in the first quarter, followng a Johnnie fumble. Lamker hookd up with his favorite receiver, junior Scott Hvistendahl, nine times for 178 yards and two touchdowns. Lamker was 24 of 49 for 338 yards and two touchdowns. Lamker became Augsburg's all-time completion leader in the victoey, passing Pete Kutches (1991-94) record of 355. Lamker now has 379 completions.

Hvistendahl, who missed the St. Thomas game because of injury, was named MIAC Offensive Player of the Week for his exploits. Senoir tight end Ted Schultz, who was honored at half-time for earning a Burger King Football Scholarship award and $10,000 donation to the Augsburg general scholarship fund, also had a great game, with five receptions for 43 yards.

The defense was led by freshman linebacker Justin Hipple, who had seven tackles in the game. Hipple also had a key sack and caused a fumble to halt a Johnnie drive late in the game. Auggie defensive backs caused St. John'ssignal callers headaches all night, with each starter picking off one pass. Sophomore Jake Kern grabbed his third interception of the season during the game.
