Tourand takes MIAC title,
Sievert All-MIAC!
Todd Tourand (pictured at left; Sr., St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo
HS), the lone senior on Augsburg's men's golf team, became the
third Auggie in school history to win the Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference individual championship when he claimed co-medalist
honors at the 1998 MIAC meet.
School history was also set on the women's golf side of the
ledger, as Andrea Sievert (pictured at right, Sr., Lakefield,
Minn./HL-O-L HS) became the first Auggie women's golfer to ever
earn All-MIAC honors with a ninth-place finish at the MIAC women's
meet.

Augsburg has a rich history of golf
excellence!
Men's Golf
Augsburg College's men's golf program has made a steady rise
to prominence in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
since coach Brian Ammann took over the reigns 11 years
ago. That rise culiminated with three straight NCAA Division
III national tournament appearances from 1995 to 1997. In 1995,
Augsburg staked its claim in the MIAC by upsetting traditional
power Gustavus Adolphus for the conference championship. After
finishing second in the MIAC meet in 1996, the Auggies have finished
third in the MIAC the last two seasons.
Augsburg has had three individual medalists in the MIAC championships
-- Gary Thorvig (1970), Terry Brown (1981) and
Todd Tourand (1998). In addition, 11 golfers have earned
All-MIAC honors since 1980 -- Dale Womeldorf (1980), Tim
Dietz (1980), Terry Brown (1981), Ben Erickson
(1994, 1995), Troy Johnson (1994, 1995), Eric Rolland
(1995, 1996), Todd Tourand (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998), Hans
Anderson (1996), Josh Klimek (1996), Terry Ditlefsen
(1997) and Mark LaBounty (1998).
On the national level, Eric Rolland earned the team's
first All-America (third team) honors, when he finished 17th
in the 1995 NCAA Division III national meet. Rolland finished
35th in the 1996 NCAA meet. Josh Klimek earned a unique
honor for the Auggies in 1995, when he won the long-drive competition
at the NCAA meet. He had a drive of 299.76 yards.
Women's Golf
Augsburg's women's golf program played under club status from
1990 to 1992. After a one-year break, the college added the sport
to its varsity program in 1994, making it the eighth varsity
women's sport at Augsburg. The team fielded its first entry in
the MIAC fall tournament in 1997, finishing seventh.
Kristen Leighton, a former Minnesota Women's Golf Association
state champion, was hired as the team's first coach, leading
the team for two seasons before Deb Balzer took over the program
in the spring of 1997. Amy Schwegman coached in the fall
half of 1997 on an interim basis before David Staniger
took the team's reigns in the spring half of 1998.
Augsburg has shown steady progress in a competitive MIAC women's
golf league, with its best finish ever coming in the 1998 fall
tournament, when Andrea Sievert became the first Auggie
women's golfer to earn All-MIAC honors with a ninth-place finish
in the conference meet. She finished her career holding nearly
every school record for women's golf.
