NORTHFIELD,
Minn. (2/11/02) -- Justin Bonestroo (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.)
had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds Monday night,
leading host St. Olaf College to a 78-70 win over Augsburg College
in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball
game at the Skoglund Center.
Bonestroo scored
13 points and had seven rebounds in the first half, leading St.
Olaf to a 38-30 lead and helping the Oles improve to 8-16 overall
and 4-15 in MIAC play. Augsburg dropped to 10-13 overall and 6-12
in MIAC play and was eliminated from contention for the six-team
MIAC postseason playoffs with the loss. Augsburg has lost three
straight games and four of its last five.
St. Olaf jumped
out to a 15-point lead four minutes into the second half and led
by 14 points, 56-42, with 11:27 remaining before the Auggies rallied
back to tie the game at 60-60 with 5:39 remaining on an 18-4 run.
Trevor Overskei (Jr., Roseville, Minn.) had three 3-pointers
in the Auggie rally, while Travis Kalis (So., Elysian,
Minn./Waterville-Elysian-Morristown HS) had five points.
Tied at 63-63
with 4:55 left, Bonestroo shut the door on an Auggie comeback
with a three-pointer with 4:23 left to put the Oles up to Stay.
St. Olaf went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line in the final one
minute to preserve the victory.
Mike Ludwig
(Jr.,
Blaine, Minn.) had 14 points and nine rebounds, while Kevin
Jaunich (Jr., Delano, Minn.) had 14 points, eight rebounds
adn five steals. Matt Schlenker (So., Rochester, Minn.)
had eight points, 13 rebounds and six assists.
Augsburg was
led by Josh Natzel (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.), who had
a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Overskei led the
Auggie scorers with 13 points. Michael Leach (Fr., Shoreview,
Minn./Mounds View HS) and Kalis had 12 points each.
Augsburg returns
to MIAC action on Wednesday (2/13) at 7:30 p.m., hosting Bethel.
St. Olaf finishes its season on Saturday (2/16), hosting Carleton
at 7:30 p.m.
