MINNEAPOLIS (2/10/07) -- Brensley Haywood (Sr., Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) led all players with 31 points, adding eight rebounds and three assists, to lead St. Mary's University past host Augsburg College 80-68 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

Michael Batterman (Sr., Fond du Lac, Wis./Lomira HS) scored 12 points and Dan Cormier (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) added 11 points and four assists for the Cardinals, who improved to 8-14 overall, 7-11 in MIAC play, staying in the hunt for a berth in the six-team MIAC postseason playoffs.

Femi Solaja (Jr., Cottage Grove, Minn./St. Paul Harding HS) collected his third straight double-double for Augsburg, with 18 points and 11 rebounds, adding two blocks. Chuck Scott (Sr., Ely, Minn.) led the Auggies with 19 points, including four 3-pointers.

Jon Cassens (Fr., Prior Lake, Minn.) had 12 points and Darren Nelson (So., Richfield, Minn.) scored 11 for the Auggies. Grant Hemmingsen (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View HS) scored six points with five rebounds.

With the loss, Augsburg drops to 8-15 overall, 5-13 in MIAC play, and is now eliminated from MIAC playoff contention.

A 12-0 run midway through the first half, paced by three 3-pointers by Haywood, gave the Cardinals a 29-17 lead with 9:53 left. The Cardinals led 39-30 at halftime.

A 12-2 Augsburg run to open the second half cut the lead to one point, and Augsburg eventually took the lead at 53-52 with 10:14 left to play. But a late run by the Cardinals -- 10-2, with six points from Haywood -- gave the Cardinals the lead to stay, at 75-65 with 43 seconds remaining.

Haywood connected on six 3-pointers for the Cardinals, who compiled 10 long-range shots as a team. The Cardinals shot 54.9 percent (28-of-51) from the field in the game, including 50 percent (10-of-20) from three-point range.

Augsburg shot 37.0 percent (20-of-54) from the field, including 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from three-point range. Augsburg outrebounded St. Mary's by a 36-26 margin in the game. Augsburg converted 12 offensive rebounds -- five from Solaja -- into 15 second-chance points in the game.

Neither team turned the ball over often, with St. Mary's committing just three turnovers, while Augsburg committed nine.

Both teams return to MIAC play on Wednesday (2/14) at 5:45 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Concordia-Moorhead and St. Mary's playing at Bethel.
