MINNEAPOLIS - Devean George (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St.
Margaret HS) had game highs of 36 points and 11 rebounds Saturday
afternoon, leading his Augsburg College men's basketball team
to a 102-83 victory over Bethel College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference men's basketball game at Augsburg's Si Melby
Hall.
Augsburg, with its 11th straight victory, is now 15-2 overall
and 12-1 in the MIAC. Bethel drops to 11-5 overall and 8-4 in
the MIAC. The win marked the fifth time Augsburg has scored 100
points or more this season.
George is now just 15 points away from the 2,000-point plateau,
with 1,985 points in 85 career games. He also has 736 career rebounds.
The scoring total is the third-highest in school history, behind
Dan Anderson (2,052 points, 1961-65) and current head coach
Brian Ammann (2,271 points, 1981-85). He is now third in
school history in rebounds. The record, held by Anderson, is 1,211
rebounds.
George, a multiple All-America selection last year, scored in
double figures for the 81st time in his 85-game career, and the
73rd time in his last 74 games. The double-double was George's
27th of his career (11th this season), and his scoring performance
marked the 56th time in his career that he has scored 20 or more
points in a single game, and the 17th time he has scored 30 or
more points.
In addition to his 36 points and 11 rebounds, George had three
assists and three steals, while going 12 for 15 at the free-throw
line.
The Auggies rallied from a 51-45 halftime deficit, after trailing
by as many as 10 points in the first half. Augsburg outscored
Bethel 57-32 in the second half and forced three Bethel players
to foul out in the game.
George was one of four Auggies in double figures in the game.
Kevin Van Rossum (Jr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) had 19
points, including three 3-pointers. John Anderson (So.,
Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) had 11 points, including three
3-pointers, and Jason Beckendorf (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.)
had 10 points.
Bethel had six players in double figures, led by Marc Johnson
(Jr., Crystal, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) with 17 points. Mitch
Bolin (Sr., Brandon, Minn.) had 13 points and a team-high
six rebounds, Eric Johnson (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Minnehaha
Academy) had 11 points and three players had 10 points each --
Trevor Duininck (Sr., Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota
Christian HS), Jeff Eklund (Sr., Braham, Minn.) and Mark
Mills (So., Gladstone, Mich.).
A matchup between two of the top scorers in Division III basketball
-- George and Bethel's Eric Joldersma (Sr., Milaca, Minn.)
-- never materialized. Joldersma, who was third in scoring (George
is ranked second) in the most recent national statistics rankings
was forced to miss Saturday's game due to an illness.
Augsburg travels to St. Mary's on Monday night at 7:30 p.m., while
Bethel plays at Carleton.
