MINNEAPOLIS (11/15/08) -- Chris Johnson (JR, Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) claimed his third collegiate hat trick with a three-goal effort -- scoring on a power-play goal, shorthanded goal and a 4-on-4 goal -- as Augsburg College completed a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey series sweep of Bethel University with a 5-3 triumph on Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Joel Sauer (SO, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) scored a first-period shorthanded goal, and Trevor Doden (FY, Red Wing, Minn.) scored his first collegiate goal on a second-period score for Augsburg (2-3-0 overall, 2-0-0 MIAC).

Kent Bostrom (SR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./Mounds View HS) had a goal and an assist, and Eric Adams (SR, Litchfield, Minn.) and Brad Peterson (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored goals for Bethel (3-2-1 overall, 0-2-0 MIAC).

Johnson claimed a power-play goal from David Hines (FY, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS) at the 12:35 mark of the second period, scored on nan unassisted, shorthanded goal at the 5:34 mark of the third period, and capped his hat trick with a 4-on-4 goal from John Lennartson (FY, Burnsville, Minn.) and Ben Roberts (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) at the 8:20 mark of the third frame.

Augsburg claimed the victory despite being outshot by a 36-23 margin -- including Bethel advantages of 16-6 in the second period and 12-4 in the third period. Andrew Kent (SR, Lakeville, Minn.) stopped 33 shots in goal for the Auggies to earn the win.

Sauer opened the scoring for the Auggies with a shorthanded goal from Jim Jensen (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) in the final minute of the first period. Doden claimed his first collegiate goal, with assists from Hines and Bryan Frischmann (SO, Rochester, Minn./Century HS), with 1:23 left in the second frame.

Bethel went 3-for-6 on the power play, with Bostrom scoring from Chris Fiala (FY, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) at the 17:13 mark of the second period, Adams scoring from Jake Kogler (FY, Forest Lake, Minn.) at the 6:09 mark of the third period, and Peterson scoring from Bostrom and Fiala at the 12:58 mark of the third period.

Aaron Damjanovich (JR, Remer, Minn./Greenway HS) had 18 saves in a losing effort for the Royals.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play with a series against St. Thomas next weekend, with Friday's (11/21) game at 7 p.m., at the UST/St. Thomas Academy Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn., and Saturday's (11/22 ) game at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena. Bethel faces St. John's in an MIAC series, with games on Thursday (11/20) at 7 p.m. at St. John's and on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Bethel.
