Men's Soccer 9/6/01 -- Augsburg 8, Crown (Minn.) 0

MINNEAPOLIS (9/6/01) -- Mike Elcano (Fr., Sparks, Nev./Bishop Manogue HS) scored a three-goal hat trick, and Andrew Robertson (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) added two other tallies as the Augsburg College men's soccer team cruised to an 8-0 win over Crown College in a nonconference contest Thursday night at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

In remaining unbeaten at 2-0-1 overall, Augsburg tied its largest single-game scoring output in the last two decades. The eight goals, also achieved in an 8-0 home win over Wisconsin-Superior on Oct. 22, 2000, were the most scored by an Augsburg team in a single game since at least 1979, the first season of accurate game-by-game records for Augsburg men's soccer. Augsburg has been playing men's soccer on the varsity level since 1970.

Crown drops to 0-2 overall with the loss.

Elcano scored two of his three goals on solid plays in a four-minute span in the first half, the first on a nice running feed from Matt Lachner (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) in the 19th minute, and the other on an unassisted series of moves inside the penalty box in the 23rd minute. He added his third goal in the 51st minute on a header in front of the goal on feeds from Garrett Robertson (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) and Jason Clark (So., Eagan, Minn.).

Robertson's two goals came in a 40-second span midway through the second half, the first on a feed to the middle from Dan Walker (Sr., Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area HS), and the second on a feed to the 15-yard mark from Hugo Quintiliano (Jr., Brasilia, Brazil/Mound-Westonka, Minn., HS).

Quintiliano had a goal and two assists, and Lachner had a goal and assist. Scott Lepper (So., Blaine, Minn.) had the other Auggie goal.

Augsburg dominated the game from start to finish, controlling the action in the Crown end for most of the game. Augsburg outshot the Stom by a 39-5 margin, had 10 corner kicks to Crown's 1 and forced Crown goalkeeper Isaac Schulz (So., Elk River, Minn.) to make 19 saves. Meanwhile, at the other end, Auggie goalkeepers Nick Shill (So., Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire North HS) and Han Zeller (So., Winona, Minn.) combined for the shutout, with Shill not having to make a save and Zeller only having to make one stop.

Augsburg used 21 players in the contest, giving much of its young lineup plenty of playing time.

Augsburg returns to action with its annual alumni game on Saturday (9/8) at 2 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field. Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a contest at Macalester College next Thursday (9/13) at 7:30 p.m.
