Game Summary:
MINNEAPOLIS (10/28/99) -- Matt Lignell (Fr., St. Joseph,
Minn.) scored the first two goals of the game Thursday, leading
his St. Mary's University men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over
host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference game at Anderson-Nelson Field.
St. Mary's improves to 8-7 overall and 4-5 in the MIAC, while
Augsburg drops to 3-12 overall and 0-9 in the MIAC.
Lignell notched the first goal on an assist from Scott Thole
(Jr., Shoreview, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) at the 38-minute mark,
then chipped in a shot from Chris Perlino (Sr., Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove
HS) in the 76th minute. A goal from Donn O'Malley (Fr.,
Crystal Lake, Ill.) from Shawn Stewart (Fr., McHenry, Ill./Johnsburg
HS) wrapped up the scoring with four minutes to play.
St. Mary's controlled the tempo of the game, dominating play in
Augsburg's end nearly the entire way. The Cardinals outshot Augsburg
by a 12-2 margin.
Gustavo Qunitiliano (Jr., Brasilia, Brazil/Mound-Westonka
HS) made six saves in goal for the Auggies, while Carl Morreale
(Sr., Crystal Lake, Minn.) made both saves for the Cardinals.
Augsburg finishes its season with a Saturday contest at Gustavus
at 1 p.m., while St. Mary's plays at Hamline on Saturday at 1
p.m.
