Season
Outlook and Notes:
MINNEAPOLIS (8/14/01) -- Back in 1999, it seemed that there was
little hope for the future of Augsburg's women's soccer program.
The team began the season with serious number problems -- it
had to play with just eight players in one contest and nine in
another -- and struggled to a 2-15 finish in head coach Mike
Navarre's first season.
Flash forward
to 2001. Augsburg enters the women's soccer season with a new
sense of confidence, a deep roster and a renewed attitude toward
success.
"It's
exciting to be a part of a program that's improving. Every game
is an opportunity to take another step forward," said Navarre,
entering his third season as chief architect of the rebirth of
soccer at Augsburg.
The Auggies
made a dramatic step forward in 2000, finishing with a 7-10-1
overall mark, 2-7-1 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference, one of the toughest leagues in NCAA Division III
women's soccer. The Auggies outscored their opponents by a 25-22
margin -- the first time Augsburg had outscored its opponents
in a season since 1997.
"Our overall
level of play will be stronger this season, and we should be
more competitive in the conference," Navarre stated.
Much of the
scoring for Augsburg in 2000 came from a talented group of newcomers,
and that group has gained a year of experience to bring back
to the program. Seventeen of the 23 Auggie players are freshmen
or sophomores.
"We now
have a very young and competitive program," Navarre said.
"While I'm pleased that our standard of play has improved,
I'm more grateful about the quality of people in our program.
I'm honored to coach a group of people who genuinely care for
each other and have fun together."
Keying the
attack will be two honorable-mention all-conference returners,
midfielder Heidi Hilleren (So., Duluth, Minn./East HS)
and defender Kristin Lideen (So., Champlin, Minn./Champlin
Park HS). Hilleren made an immediate impact on the Auggie offense,
leading the team in all scoring categories -- six goals, five
assists for 17 points. Meanwhile, Lideen was the anchor of an
Auggie defense that allowed just 22 goals, the lowest number
allowed for an Augsburg team since 1997 (19).
"Heidi
is a great playmaker. She's one of our best attacking players,"
Navarre said. "Kristin is a solid defender. She's the centerpiece
of our defense."
Laura Hoffman
(So.,
Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) made an immediate impact in the
goalkeeping spot last season, scoring three shutouts and a 0.99
goals-against-average in 12 games, before being sidelined with
a season-ending leg injury. She is back and healthy, Navarre
said.
Seniors Katie
Cheese (Sr., Shakopee, Minn.) and Katy Udvig (Sr.,
New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) will return to the defense as
well. Cheese has proven her versatility throughout her career,
as she moved to goalkeeping responsibilities in 1999, then returned
to the position in 2000 after Hoffman's injury. She had a 1.64
GAA in nine games. Udvig has also had to fight the injury bug,
but has become a solid defensive contributor.
"Katie
Cheese is a great role model for the other players. She works
very hard and is willing to help the team wherever she can,"
Navarre said. "Katy Udvig is another person that has done
a lot for our program. They help set the tone for our team, bringing
positive attitudes to practice and caring for their teammates."
Two juniors,
Laura Grant (Jr., Starbuck, Minn./Minnewaska Area HS)
and Kim Glumich (Jr., Moorhead, Minn.) also return to
the defense, along with several key recruits, including Ashley
Gebhardt (Fr., La Crosse, Wis./Central HS), who earned four
straight all-conference honors in high school. Two other all-conference
prep players, Laura Prasek (Fr., Fridley, Minn.) and Eva
Spillman (Fr., Fridley, Minn.), will also contribute to the
Auggie backfield.
Augsburg's
midfield will bekeyed by Hilleren and playmaker Kristi Ofstad
(So., Rapid City, S.D./Rapid City Stevens HS), who scored
four goals and had an assist for nine points in her initial Auggie
campaign. Krista Henkelman (Fr., Mankato, Minn./Mankato
West HS), an all-city and all-conference selection, will join
Ofstad and Hilleren in the middle.
Simone Burch
(So.,
St. Paul, Minn./Arlington HS), who had a goal and two assists
last season, returns to the forward position, and will be joined
by two solid newcomers, sophomore Jazz Burch (So., Minnetonka,
Minn./St. Louis Park HS) and senior transfer Tiffany Johnson
(Sr., Aberdeen, S.D.).
Jazz Burch
was a two-time high school all-state selection at St. Louis Park,
and was the leader of a Park club that reached the Class A state
championship game in 1998. Johnson transfers into the program
after playing her first three seasons at Division II Northern
State University.
