Kern, Chappuis, Van Houten named to Lutheran Brotherhood Lutheran College All-America Football Team MINNEAPOLIS (1/20/00) -- Augsburg College football players Jake Kern (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), Matt Chappuis (So., Faribault, Minn.) and Jason Van Houten (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) were among members chosen to the Lutheran Brotherhood Lutheran College All-America Football Team, it was announced recently. Kern, a safety, earned first-team defensive back honors, while Chappuis was honored as a second-team defensive lineman and Van Houten was named as an honorable mention selection. The team, nominated by sports information directors, represents the top football athletes from the 41 Lutheran colleges across the country and sponsored by Lutheran Brotherhood, a member-owned fraternal benefit society of 1.1 million Lutherans joined together for financial security, benevolent outreach and volunteer service. Twenty-four players were named to the first team, another 24 were second team selections. Twenty-three of 41 colleges were represented by either first- or second-team players. Candidates for the 1999 Lutheran Brotherhood Lutheran College All-American football team were nominated by sports information directors at their institutions. Nominations were then reviewed by a committee that included three SIDs representing each region of the country, two former sportswriters, a former NCAA recruiter, and representatives of Lutheran Brotherhood. All-American team members were chosen based on a wide range of criteria including personal statistics and honors, team statistics, division of play and personal character. Kern led the Auggies in tackles for the second year in a row,
recording 82 tackles (65 solo), while intercepting two passes
and breaking up six more. He also recorded two blocked punts this
season. In his career at Augsburg, Kern had 12 interceptions,
17 pass breakups and 221 tackles (144 solo). A physics major with
a 3.75 grade-point average, Kern was also selected to the GTE
Academic All-District squad for football three seasons in a row,
including this season. Chappuis, an All-MIAC second-team selection, was a key defensive lineman for the 1999 Auggies in his first year as a starter. He finished third on the team in tackles (62, 29 solo) and led the team in sacks (9.0) and tackles for loss (13.5). His 13.5 career sacks put him at No. 5 on the school's record list with two years left in his career. Van Houten, an All-MIAC first-team selection in 1999 and honorable mention selection in 1998, was second on the team in both tackles for loss (9.5) and sacks (7.0). His 16.5 career sacks are third-most in school history. He finished his career with 110 tackles (55 solo), including 37 (13 solo) this season as an interior lineman. Augsburg finished 6-4 in the 1999 season (5-4 MIAC). The 6-4 performance marked the third straight winning season for Augsburg, the first time the school has had three consecutive winning seasons since 1927-28-29.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- Division III national champion Pacific Lutheran University led all schools with six players chosen for the 1999 Lutheran Brotherhood Lutheran College All-American Football Team. Running back Anthony Hicks, offensive lineman Josh Hostetter and linebacker Luke Gearhard were all first team selections. Quarterback Chad Johnson, offensive lineman Andrew Finstuen, and defensive linemen John Eussen all made the second team. Any player participating in football at one of the 41 Lutheran colleges across America was eligible for nomination. In addition to both being first team selections, standout running backs Paul Smith (Gettysburg College) and Hicks were named co-players of the year. Smith gained 1,546 yards on 237 rushes, good for an average of 6.5 per carry. The Gettysburg senior rushed for 15 touchdowns, and caught three more as part of his 301 yards receiving on the season. Hicks led PLU with 1,202 rushing yards--averaging 7.7 per carry. Also a senior, Hicks ran in 13 touchdowns, and caught three more. Hicks caught 26 passes for 401 yards. "While the quality of nominees from different levels of college football made it difficult to decide, this year's teams are definitely comprised of the very best football players at Lutheran colleges."
