Augsburg's Tiffany Magnuson among finalists for 2009 NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge VOTE FOR TIFFANY! CLICK HERE TO VOTE! MINNEAPOLIS (1/27/09) -- Augsburg College women's hockey forward Tiffany Magnuson (SR, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) was recently picked as one of 68 finalists for selection to compete in the 2009 NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge, to be held at the Men's Division I Frozen Four in Washington, D.C., on April 10. Magnuson was one of 34 women's hockey players selected as finalists, and the lone Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player on the finalist list. Magnuson is the lone NCAA Division III player among the 17 women's West Region finalists, and one of just three Division III women on the finalist list. Just two Division III men are on the 34-player men's finalist list. The finalists were selected from a field of approximately 140 nominees, all players who will exhaust their eligibility this season. Later this season, a selection committee will pare the 68 finalists to the 32 players that will compete in the event, that will be held April 10 at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., as part of the Frozen Four. To help determine the final 32 selections, a fan-voting element will be incorporated by the NCAA. While the fan voting will aid in the selection process, the ultimate decisions will be made by the selection committee by the end of February. Magnuson has shined in two sports as an Augsburg student-athlete -- women's hockey and softball. In hockey, Magnuson has earned All-MIAC first-team honors each of her first three seasons -- one of just three Class of 2009 women's hockey players in the conference that can make that claim. Magunson currently has two goals and seven assists for nine points on the season. With 58 goals in 90 career games, Magnuson stands just 10 goals away from the Augsburg career record for goal-scoring, 68, set by Angie Rieger (1998-2001). Magnuson has 89 career points to currently stand fourth in school history in the points category; the school record of 137 was set by Lauren Chezick (2002-05). In softball, Magnuson is one of only two incoming seniors in the MIAC to have earned All-MIAC first-team honors in each of their first three seasons. She also earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Midwest Region third-team honors in 2008. A versatile player who has seen action at three positions -- first base, second base and pitcher -- in her career, Magnuson enters the 2009 season with a .379 career batting average with 74 runs scored, 17 doubles, 11 triples, three home runs and 30 RBI, along with 42 stolen bases. Other Division III women's players on the Skills Challenge finalist list are Danielle Blanchard of Plattsburgh State (N.Y.) and Kayla Coady of Elmira (N.Y.). Nick Klaren of Wisconsin-Stout and Keith Longo of Hobart (N.Y.) are Division III men's finalists.
