Augsburg's Aaron Johnson selected to compete in NCAA Pontiac Frozen Four Skills Challenge NCAA MEN'S HOCKEY PAGE -- CLICK HERE
Johnson was selected as one of 32 competitors from among a field of 181 student-athletes that were nominated by head coaches of NCAA men's and women's hockey teams. From the 181 nominees, 89 finalists were selected, and voting was conducted on an online poll at NCAASports.com. A selection committee made up representatives from the American Hockey Coaches Association, the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Committee and the National Youth Sports Corporation selected the 32 competitors. To be eligible, players must have exhausted their collegiate eligibility by the event. Players who have to withdrawl from the competition due to other commitments, such as their teams playing in the Division I Frozen Four, will be replaced by alternates. The Pontiac Frozen Four Skills Challenge will be held on April 6 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis and will be shown live on ESPNU. The schedule of events for "Friday Night at the Frozen Four" will include the presentation of the Hobey Baker Memorial Award at 6 p.m., the presentation of the Hockey Humanitarian Award at 6:35 p.m. and the NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the event are $10 and can be purchased at the Scottrade Center box office, all Ticketmaster outlets, www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at 314-241-1888. The Skills Challenge will be held in an East-vs.-West format, with each team having six male position players, six female position players, two male goaltenders and two female goaltenders. The competitions will include puck control relay, fastest skater, hardest shot, rapid-fire shooting, accuracy shooting and penalty shot. Each competitior will receive a complete set of equipment and a full uniform from Nike Bauer Hockey. Johnson is one of two Division III men's hockey players -- one on each regional squad -- selected to compete. Fredonia State (N.Y.) senior Kyle Bozoian was selected to compete on the men's East squad. It is the second straight year that a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player has been selected to compete in the event; St. John's goalie Adam Hanna was named to compete in the inaugural event last year. The Skills Challenge selection is the latest honor for Johnson. A two-time All-MIAC honoree, Johnson earned a spot on the AHCA/RBK Hockey Division III All-American first team in 2005-06, and was named a Preseason All-USCHO Division III West Region honoree this season. In his career (80 games, 75 at Augsburg), Johnson has 126 points (38 goals, 88 assists). Johnson finished the regular season with 15 goals and team-highs of 27 assists and 42 points. His assist total leads the MIAC in overall stats for the second straight year, and he currently stands second in the MIAC in overall points. His goal total is fifth-best among MIAC players in overall statistics. Augsburg (12-9-4 overall, 9-3-4 MIAC) has won seven of its last eight games, including its last four in a row. The Auggies qualified for the MIAC playoffs for the first time since the 2002-03 season, and as the No. 3 seed, will face No. 2 seed St. Thomas in a semifinal matchup on Thursday (3/1) at 7 p.m. at the St. Thomas Arena at St. Thomas Academy High School in Mendota Heights, Minn. 2007 NCAA Pontiac Frozen Four Skills Challenge Participants Men's
