Football
Augsburg finished with a 5-5 overall record and 4-4 conference mark, finishing at .500 for the first time since 1999 (6-4). Under head coach Jack Osberg, now Augsburg's all-time win leader (60-71) in his 13th season at Augsburg, Augsburg has seven .500-or-above seasons -- second to Edor Nelson's eight .500-or-above seasons in 23 years of coaching (1947-69).

Augsburg's Nick Schlieman (So., Burnsville, Minn.), Adam Hoffmann (Jr., Hastings, Minn.), Yarzue Slowon (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Brandon Fox (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) earned All-MIAC recognition on a vote of league coaches.

Schlieman, a punter/kicker, also earned third-team All-West Region recognition by Don Hansen's Football Gazette magazine, as well as honorable-mention All-American honors by the D3football.com website. Schlieman earned All-MIAC first-team honors for the second straight year, while linebacker Fox and wide receiver Slowon earned All-MIAC second-team honors for the second straight year. Hoffmann, a center, was named for the first time to the All-MIAC second team.

Seven Auggies also received votes in the conference coaches' balloting to earn All-MIAC honorable-mention honors -- running backs Ben Paul (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) and Steve Houser (So., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS); wide receiver Jamie Smith (Sr., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS); tight end Andrew Neumann (Fr., Somerset, Wis.); quarterback Tony George (So., Blaine, Minn.); and defensive linemen Joe Cullen (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Sam Harmer (Sr., Silver Bay, Minn./William M. Kelley HS).

Schlieman was the conference's top punter for the second straight year, averaging 42.0 yards per punt overall, 40.2 yards per punt in eight MIAC games -- the only conference punter to average 40 yards per punt in league play. His 42.0 overall average currently ranks third-best in the country in the NCAA Division III national rankings -- one of only 10 punters nationally to average 40 yards or more per punt.

This season, Schlieman finished with 57 punts. Of those, 33 were 40 yards or longer, 14 were 50 yards or longer and five were 60 yards or longer, including a school-record 74-yarder in the season-opener against Jamestown (N.D.) and punts of 68, 61, 65 and 66 yards. Schlieman placed 18 punts inside the opponent 20-yard line this season, against nine touchbacks and only two fair catches. He earned MIAC Special Teams Player of the Week and Don Hansen's Football Gazette Division III National Special Teams Player of the Week honors following the Jamestown game.

Hoffman, a two-year starter at center and a team co-captain, led an offensive line that enabled the Auggies to average 3,172 yards of total offense (4.4 yards per carry), including 1,968 passing yards, while allowing just 19 sacks this season. in his two seasons as a starter, Augsburg has averaged 321.7 yards of total offense per game, including 208.6 passing yards per game, while allowing just 37 sacks (0.9 per game). Hoffmann received the team's Outstanding Lineman award in 2002, his first-year as a full-time starter. An accounting major with a 3.750 grade-point average, Hoffmann was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District first team for football this season. He earned the team's Outstanding Academic Achievement listing in 2002, in addition to receiving Academic All-MIAC honors.

Slowon, a two-year starter at wide receiver and team co-captain this year, led the Auggies in receiving, with 44 catches for 652 yards (14.8 yards per catch) and a team-high seven touchdowns. He was also the team's top kick returner, averaging 23.2 yards per return. He had 1,259 all-purpose yards this year. Slowon was seventh among MIAC players in all-purpose yards this season (1,009 in conference games, 126.1 yards per game). In his two seasons at Augsburg, Slowon has 97 catches for 1,378 yards (14.2 yards per reception), and is on pace to become just the fourth Auggie to accumulate more than 2,000 career receiving yards.

Fox, a three-year starter at linebacker and team co-captain this year, recorded 103 tackles (45 solo) to lead the team, the first Auggie defender to record 100-plus tackles since the 1996 season. He also had a team-high 20 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, to go with two interceptions and two fumble recoveries this year. His 90 tackles (39 solo) in MIAC play were second-best in the conference, and his 13.5 tackles for loss in MIAC play led the league. A business management major with a 3.630 GPA, Fox was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District second team for football this season. Fox earned Academic All-MIAC honors in 2002. He has earned Dean's List recognition in five of his six prior semesters at Augsburg.

Paul earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors for the second time in his career, also earning the honor in 2001. Paul had 88 carries for 357 yards and six touchdowns, along with 16 pass receptions for 65 yards. In his career at Augsburg (three years on varsity), Paul finished with 289 rushes for 1,420 yards and 15 rushing touchdowns, the third-most rushing scores in school history.

Houser, in his first year as a varsity regular, led the Auggies in rushing this season, with 563 rushing yards on 142 carries (4.0 average). Houser was sixth in the MIAC in rushing, averaging 74.6 rushing yards per game in league play (522 yards). He has 155 carries for 609 yards (3.9 yards per carry) in his two seasons at Augsburg.

Smith returned to the football team after a year absence and became the team's No. 2 receiver, with 540 receiving yards on 37 receptions (14.6 yards per catch) and four touchdowns. He also had nine punt returns for 36 yards and five kickoff returns for 62 yards. He was seventh in the MIAC in receiving yards per game (54.0 yards per game in MIAC play). In his three seasons at Augsburg, Smith caught 52 passes for 731 yards and six touchdowns.

Neumann caught 44 passes for 498 yards and a touchdown this season, the most catches and yards for an Augsburg tight end since Ted Schultz caught 55 passes for 505 yards in 1997. He was fifth in MIAC play in receptions per game (33 in conference games, 4.12 per game) and 10th in receiving yardage per game (44.8 yards per game in MIAC play), both totals tops among conference tight ends.

George shined in his first year as Augsburg's starting quarterback, throwing for 1,659 yards (165.9 yards per game) and 13 touchdowns against 16 interceptions, completing 48.3 percent of his passes (139-for-288). He was third among MIAC quarterbacks in passing yardage per game in league play, averaging 156.4 yards in eight MIAC games with 10 touchdowns. In his two seasons, George has 1,796 passing yards and 14 touchdowns.

Cullen, a three-year starter on the defensive line, earned All-MIAC honorable-mention recognition for the second straight year. He finished this season with 59 tackles (25 solo), including 16 tackles for loss and a team-high eight sacks. Cullen was fifth in league play in sacks in conference games (six). A mathematics major with a 3.433 GPA, Cullen was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District second team for football this season.

Volleyball
Augsburg's volleyball team made significant strides in individual improvement under new head coach Cathy Skinner. Skinner joined the Auggie program with extensive Division I coaching experience, including four years as the head coach at Fordham (N.Y.) and three years as the top assistant coach at eastern power Princeton (N.J.).

Playing a tough schedule that saw the Auggies compete in four tournaments, Augsburg finished 3-24 overall, 1-10 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Augsburg claimed a 3-1 win over Bethany (Kan.) at the Augsburg Invitational on Sept. 6, a 3-1 win over the University of Chicago on Sept. 20 and a 3-0 sweep of St. Catherine on Oct. 17.

The Auggies were paced this season by the play of middle hitter Kristy Larson (Jr., Pine Island, Minn.), who led the team in kills (191, 2.25 per game) and attack percentage (.208), while contributing 45 blocks (14 solo), third-best on the team. Freshman right-side hitter Elsie Ginsberg (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) had an incredible debut season, compiling 157 kills (2.31 per game) and 55 blocks (8 solo), despite missing six matches early in the season due to injury.

Five Auggies compiled 100 or more kills on the year, including three sophomores -- outside hitter Linnea Evans (So., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS, 188), outside hitter Britt Bogner (So., Apple Valley, Minn., 113) and middle hitter Billie Painschab (So., Howard Lake, Minn./Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted HS, 103). Painschab led the Auggies with 81 blocks (10 solo). Setter Alexis Johnson (So., Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) accumulated 489 assists on the year, while Evans' 224 digs led the team.

The Auggies were a very young team, with nine freshmen and sophomores and only four seniors -- setter Anna Piermantier (Jr., Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS), liberos Alli Burgess (Jr., Soudan, Minn./Tower-Soudan HS) and Mandy Good (Sr., Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan HS) and outside hitter Liz Youngman (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels HS).

Aaron Riedel (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) was named to the All-MIAC squad for the first time in his career, one of only four sophomores named to the 21-member All-MIAC squad in 2003. Riedel led the Auggies in scoring in 2003, with nine goals and four assists for 22 points. He had a goal or assist in seven games this season, and now has 16 goals and 10 assists for 42 career points. He set a school single-game scoring record with four goals, including three straight goals in the second half, in Augsburg's 7-2 win over Coe (Iowa) on Sept. 7.

Academy of Holy Angels boys' soccer head coach Greg Holker was named Augsburg's new men's soccer head coach in March. Austin moved from forward to defense this season and shined, as one of three defenders to earn All-MIAC recognition. She scored one goal this year and was a key member of an Auggie defense that recorded eight shutouts and allowed just 20 goals -- a 1.08 team goals-against-average.

Hilleren's senior campaign was one of the best of her career, as she scored six goals and four assists for 16 points. She closed her career with 17 goals, 19 assists and 53 points -- each total fourth-best in school history. She had an 11-4-2 record, seven shutouts and a 0.95 goals-against-average this season, one of five sub-1.00 single-season GAAs in school history (she has three). In her 62 career games in goal, Hoffman finished with a 35-22-4 record, the most career wins in school history. Her 23 career shutouts are second-best in school history.
