Augsburg College Athletics 2005-06 Year in Review: Spring Sports FALL SPORTS YEAR IN REVIEW, CLICK HERE BASEBALL | SOFTBALL | M/W TRACK AND FIELD | MEN'S GOLF | WOMEN'S GOLF | Baseball (18-19-1 overall, 8-12 MIAC--t7th/11) Under third-year head coach Keith Bateman, Augsburg finished the 2006 season at 18-20-1 overall, 8-12 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. Bateman is now 58-60-1 in his three seasons at Augsburg, recording double-digit win totals in each of his three seasons. The Auggies claimed conference sweeps of St. Mary's and Macalester, and split with St. Thomas, the conference's regular-season champion and an NCAA Division III national tournament participant. Augsburg also claimed doubleheader splits in league play with conference tournament participant Hamline, Concordia-Moorhead and St. John's. Catcher Troy Deden (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) earned All-MIAC baseball honors, while teammates Darren Ginther (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Ricky Schreier (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) earned honorable-mention All-MIAC honors. For Deden, it is his second straight All-MIAC first-team honor. Deden was named an Augsburg Senior Athlete of the Year in late April, and earned ABCA/Rawlings All-Midwest Region third-team honors last season. A catcher, Deden transferred to Augsburg in 2004 after playing his freshman season at fellow MIAC school St. Mary's. In conference play, Deden hit .333 (21-for-63), with 12 runs scored, four doubles, one triple, nine RBI, a .429 slugging percentage and a .447 on-base percentage. Defensively, he did not have an error in 105 chances for a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, second to Gustavus Adolphus' Ben Sherer for the most chances without an error (Sherer had no errors in 111 chances). Overall, Deden hit .352 (37-for-105), with 19 runs scored, six doubles, two triples, 24 RBI, a .448 slugging percentage and a .431 on-base percentage. He was also perfect defensively in overall play, with no errors in 156 chances -- again second among MIAC players overall to Sherer's 170 chances. In his three seasons at Augsburg, Deden hit .345 (118-for-342) in 108 games, with 65 runs scored, 18 doubles, 10 triples, two home runs, 83 RBI, a .474 slugging percentage and a .418 on-base percentage. He has a .987 career fielding percentage, wtih just six errors in 445 chances. Ginther earned his second all-conference honors, after earning All-MIAC honors last season. Ginther was also named an Augsburg Senior Honor Athlete in late April, and earned ABCA/Rawlings All-Midwest Region second-team honors last season. He was also an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first-team and Academic All-District first-team selection last year. This season, he was named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second-team honoree. He is an economics and social studies major with a 3.76 grade-point average. A third baseman/pitcher, Ginther transferred to Augsburg in 2004 after playing his freshman season at Division I Valparaiso (Ind.). Ginther hit .275 in MIAC play (19-of-69), with 17 runs scored, seven doubles (third-most in MIAC play), three triples (tied for most in MIAC play), 17 RBI, a .464 slugging percentage and a .359 on-base percentage. As a pitcher, Ginther went 2-4 in MIAC play, with 19 strikeouts against 17 walks. Overall, Ginther led Augsburg regulars in batting average, hitting .378 (48-for-127) with 27 runs scored, 16 doubles (tied for most among MIAC players overall), seven triples (tied for most among MIAC players overall), one home run, 32 RBI (fourth-most among MIAC players overall), a .638 slugging percentage and .437 on-base percentage. As a pitcher, Ginther was 4-5 with a 5.81 ERA in 11 starts, with 29 strikeouts against 21 walks in 52.2 innings pitched. In his career, Ginther hit .389 (151-for-388) in 117 games, with 100 runs scored, 33 doubles, 16 triples, six home runs, 85 RBI, a .603 slugging percentage and a .468 on-base percentage. In 32 pitching appearances (31 starts), he recorded a 13-14 record, 4.74 ERA, and 96 strikeouts against 54 walks in 163.1 innings pitched. He pitched 13 complete games and three career shutouts. For Schreier, it is his second All-MIAC honor of the school year. A wide receiver in football, Schreier earned second-team All-MIAC honors in 2005 after leading the Auggies with 766 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns, while standing second on the team in total receptions with 53. An outfielder in baseball, Schreier compiled a team-leading .391 batting average (25-for-64) in conference play, with 18 runs scored, four doubles, two triples, eight RBI, a .516 slugging percentage and .451 on-base percentage. Overall, Schreier was second among team regulars in hitting, with a .357 average (41-for-115), along with 25 runs scored, six doubles, two triples, 15 RBI, a .443 slugging percentage and .405 on-base percentage. He also had six stolen bases. In his three seasons at Augsburg, Schreier has hit .338 (105-for-311) in 98 career games, with 11 doubles, five triples, 33 RBI, a .405 slugging percentage, .384 on-base percentage and 16 stolen bases. Augsburg had one of its largest rosters in program history -- 42 players -- and will lose just nine seniors to graduation. Softball (16-22 overall, 9-13 MIAC--t7th/12) Augsburg finished the 2006 season 16-22 overall and 9-13 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, doubling its number of wins from the 2005 campaign. As a team, Augsburg hit .269 and had a 3.81 team ERA. Augsburg claimed conference sweeps of Macalester and Carleton, and split league doubleheaders with Gustavus, Concordia-Moorhead, Bethel, St. Benedict and St. Olaf this season. The Auggies were in their final season under head coach Carol Enke, who is resigning from her coaching position after the season. In 21 seasons at Augsburg, Enke compiled a 302-426-3 career record. Tim Gormley, currently an assistant coach at St. Thomas, will take over coaching duties at Augsburg for the 2007 season. Second baseman Tiffany Magnuson (Fr., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) earned All-MIAC softball honors, while outfielder Jacci Mattern (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) earned honorable-mention All-MIAC honors. For Magnuson, it is her second All-MIAC honor of the school year. As a member of Augsburg's women's hockey team, Magnuson was named to the All-MIAC and MIAC All-Rookie teams. In softball, Magnuson led the Auggies in overall hitting, with a .367 batting average (36-for-98), with 25 runs scored, two doubles, six triples (tied for second-most among MIAC players overall), one home run, 10 RBI, a .541 slugging percentage and a .447 on-base percentage. She also had a team-high 15 stolen bases in 16 attempts. In conference play, Magnuson hit a team-high .368 (25-for-68) with 17 runs scored, two doubles, four triples (tied for third-most among MIAC players), five RBI, a .515 slugging percentage and a .442 on-base percentage. She was also a perfect 12-for-12 in stolen bases (fourth-most among MIAC players). An outfielder, Mattern finished second on the team in hitting, with a .325 batting average (37-for-114), with 25 runs scored, six doubles, six triples (tied for second-most among MIAC players overall), 18 RBI, a .482 slugging percentage and a .374 on-base percentage. She also had 10 stolen bases in 13 attempts. In conference play, Mattern hit .290 (20-for-69) with 11 runs scored, four doubles, five triples (tied for most among MIAC players), 13 RBI, a .493 slugging percentage, a .329 on-base percentage and six stolen bases in seven attempts. Sarah Green (Fr., Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III All-Midwest Region first team as a designated player. Green was the first all-region selection for Augsburg's softball program since 2003, and the first freshman to earn all-region honors since Kristen Lideen earned second-team honors as a shortstop in 2001. Augsburg has had 30 NFCA All-Region selections since the 1984 season. Green hit .298 (28-of-94) on the season, with five runs scored, 10 doubles, three home runs and a team-high 25 RBI. She had a .500 slugging percentage and .402 on-base percentage with a team-high 16 walks. As a pitcher, Green was 5-8 on the season with a 4.92 earned-run average in 22 appearances. She struck out 37 and had 41 walks in 84.0 innings of work. Jolene Ross (So., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS), an All-MIAC selection at shortstop last year, hit .311 (37-of-119) on the season for the Auggies, while Ashley Westerman (So., Bemidji, Minn.) hit .282 (31-for-110) with a team-high 11 doubles and 11 RBI. Pitcher Shelley Harris (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS), one of three seniors on the team, had the best year of her career in 2006, with an 11-13 record, 3.10 earned-run average and 70 strikeouts aganinst 25 walks. She finished her career with a 30-63 record, a 3.67 ERA and 258 strikeouts, second-most in school history. M/W Track and Field (Men 11th/11 at MIAC indoor meet, 10th/11 at MIAC outdoor meet; Women 11th/12 at MIAC indoor meet, 11th/12 at MIAC outdoor meet) Augsburg track and field athletes earned All-American honors in three events, earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and All-MIAC honorable-mention honors in 13 events, and set school records in seven different events in the 2005 indoor and outdoor seasons. Sprinter Tonnisha Bell (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) had the best year of her career in 2006. In the indoor half of the season, she set facility records at Carleton at the MIAC championships in winning the 55- (7.13 seconds) and 200-meter (25.29) dashes, while placing third in the long jump. At the NCAA Division III indoor national championships at St. Olaf, she qualified in the 55 and placed second with a 7.10-second time, just one-hundredth of a second behind the national champion in the event. It marked the third time she had earned All-American honors in the indoor 55, having placed sixth in the event in both 2003 and 2005. Bell earned MIAC Outstanding Female Track Athlete awards at the conference indoor championships, and was named NCAA Division III Central Region Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Bell earned more accolades in the outdoor half of the season. She won both the 100- (12.00 seconds) and 200-meter (25.07) dashes at the MIAC outdoor championships, claiming the title in the 100 for the third time and in the 200 for the second straight year. And at the NCAA Division III outdoor national championships at Benedictine (Ill.), she earned All-American honors in both events, finishing fourth in the 100 (11.96) and fifth in the 200 (24.38). She became the first Auggie since Astrid Larssen in 1998 to earn multiple All-American honors at a single track championship meet. Bell finished her collegiate career as one of the top sprinters in school history, finishing with five All-American honors. She qualified for every indoor and outdoor NCAA championship meet -- eight -- in her Auggie career. In MIAC meets, Bell won 11 conference championships (six indoor, five outdoor) and earned All-MIAC honors 15 times (nine indoor, six outdoor) in her career. Angela Bergeson (Sr., Red Wing, Minn.) also had one of the best seasons of her career. In the indoor season, she set a new school record in the mile run (5:07.39) and finished fourth in the 1,000-meter run at the conference championships to earn All-MIAC honorable-mention honors. In the outdoor season, Bergeson claimed a new school record in the 800-meter run (2:12.76), finished third at the MIAC championships in the 800 to earn All-MIAC honors in the event, and qualified for her second NCAA Division III outdoor championships (first as an individual), competing in the preliminaries in the 800. Augsburg's women's outdoor 400-meter relay of Felicia Faison (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), Jessica Nordness (So., Burnsville, Minn.), Megan Krumrie (Fr., Elk Mound, Wis.) and Bell set school records four times during the season, finishing fourth at the conference championships. On the men's side, sprinter Tony Ciro (Sr., Spring Lake Park, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) earned All-MIAC honors with a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.59 seconds), while earning All-MIAC honorable-mention honors with a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.12 seconds). A marketing major with a 3.92 grade-point average, Ciro also was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Men's Track and Field/Cross Country Second Team. Kevin Haglund (Jr., Fridley, Minn./Concordia Academy HS) earned two All-MIAC honorable-mention honors, finishing sixth in the triple jump in both the the MIAC indoor and outdoor championships. Spencer Power (Jr., Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS) also earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors with a fifth-place finish in the discus at the MIAC outdoor championships. Men's Golf (3rd/10 at MIAC meet) Under new co-head coaches Ted Vickerman and Jim Rustad, Augsburg completed one of its most successful men's golf seasons in recent years in 2005-06. The Auggies finished with an overall team stroke average of 307.20, the best overall average for the team since the 1997-98 season (307.38). Augsburg had just one senior on its roster, and will return 12 golfers to the lineup for next season. In the fall half of the season, Augsburg finished third at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships, marking the 12th year in a row that Augsburg has finished in the top five in the MIAC championship meet and the team's best finish since 2000. In college golf, the season is split into fall and spring halves. Augsburg finished the fall half of the 2005-06 campaign with a team stroke average of 306.91, the best fall team stroke average since a 305.41 fall average in the 1995-96 season. In the spring half of the year, Augsburg finished with a stroke average of 307.56, its best spring average since a 303.71 spring average in the 1999-2000 season. Andrew Womeldorf (So., Northfield, Minn.) and Erik Helgerson (Jr., Chisago City, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) earned all-conference honors with top-10 finishes at the MIAC fall championships. Womeldorf placed fifth overall with a 6-over-par 150 (78-72) to make the All-MIAC listing for the first time, marking his second straight top-15 finish at the conference meet. He finished 14th at last year's championships. Helgerson tied for ninth in the MIAC field with an 8-over-par 152 total (74-78), earning all-conference honors for the second time in his career. He also finished ninth at the 2003 MIAC meet to earn all-conference honors. Eight Auggie golfers finished the 2005-06 season with stroke averages in the 70s, led by Andrew Johnson (Jr., New Hope, Minn.), who had a 76.40 season-long average. Brian May (Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) had a 77.45 average, followed by Colby Anderson (So., Luverne, Minn.) with a 77.60 average, Womeldorf with a 77.79 average and Helgerson with a 77.95 average. Women's Golf (incomplete team finish at MIAC meet, 7th/13 at MWCGA spring state meet) Under co-head coaches Laura Patrick and Troy Nygaard, Augsburg finished the 2005-06 season with an overall stroke average of 392.91, including a spring stroke average of 384.50 and a fall stroke average of 392.43. Augsburg finished seventh at the Minnesota Women's Collegiate Golf Association State Championships in May, while recording an incomplete team finish at the fall Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships. Marisa Navarro (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Century HS), Augsburg's top golfer throughout her career, concluded her junior season with a team-leading 86.08 stroke average. She has an 85.78 career stroke average after three seasons. She finished just two shots away from earning All-MIAC honors with a 176 (89-87) total at the MIAC meet, and she placed 19th at the season-ending MWCGA State Championships. Teammate Laura Henry (Jr., Hugo, Minn./Forest Lake HS) also had the best season of her career, with an 89.46 season-long stroke average, cutting five strokes off her season stroke average from 2004-05. She also came close to earning All-MIAC honors, finishing three strokes back of 10th place with a 177 (87-90) total. She placed 21st at the spring MWCGA state meet. In three years (she competed her freshman season at Concordia-Moorhead), Henry has a 93.16 career stroke average. Brooke Hamann (Sr., Perham, Minn.), the lone senior on the roster, finished with a 97.31 stroke average this season, ending her four-year career with a 98.44 stroke average in 59 rounds (5,808 strokes). Newcomer Ellen Watters (Fr., Lindstrom, Minn.) had a 125.73 stroke average this season.
